Upgrade from INC2 advice

I have an INC 2 out of warranty. I've had issues with it due to the latest OTA. I was able to finally get the software back after literally DAYS of research and experimenting with flashing different roms, etc. I am being offered a INC 4G LTE at upgrade price with a contract renewal. If I do not take this now, I will have to wait a year until I can upgrade again (special offer). I am afraid since my INC 2 is out of warranty, if anything happens, I might miss this opportunity. I can probably sell my INC 2 for $200. Should I upgrade because I will have a 1 year warranty and it's a decent price? I'm just afraid of my INC2 breaking again... that would suck. Also, Verizon is out of INC 2 replacements.

I would do it. What price are they offering it to you? The only thing you need to worry about is if you're on unlimited data. If you upgrade you will lose it and go on a shared data plan. Do you have Asurion insurance? If you do, check to see if you have total equipment coverage. It gives you an extended warranty, but won't affect your upgrade date.

Are you set on keeping your Inc 2? Do you happen to have another line on a family share plan that is eligible for an upgrade? If so, go to Best Buy where the Incredible 2 is free, upgrade that line and then later transfer the phone to your line.

The latest update also messed up my original Inc. I ended up getting a Rezound because I coudn't get the Incredible 4G and keep my unlimited data. So jealous they're offering you one early! I just got my Rezound yesterday and I'm already wondering why I didn't just wait for the 4G and forget about unlimited data.

Just curious, do you currently have an unlimited data plan? Because my brother had an issue with his OG Incredible, and their first thought was to get him a new phone (all it needed was a factory reset, which is what they normally suggest). I was told last January that the earliest they could do any upgrade was 6 months early, and my brother is at 7 months.

I think that Verizon is offering you the upgrade to get you off of unlimited data and onto a tiered or shared data plan.

If you think you can live with a tiered data plan, then I'd say it's a good deal, especially if you can get $200 out of your Inc2. Even if you don't, your only other option is ebay or craigslist, where you'll probably spend what you will on an Inc4G, and you could end up with a phone that is worse off than what you have now. At least with a new phone you have a year warranty, and you could throw on insurance or extended warranty if you're worried about this happening again.

But do realize that by signing that contract you lose unlimited data forever. If you hit overages enough times, that might pay for a phone on it's own.

He won't necessarily go to a shared data plan. You can opt for a tiered data plan like what they've had for the past year. That's what'll happen if one line of a family share plan upgrades. They don't knock the other lines out of unlimited data, that line just goes to a tiered data plan (don't know if they only offer 2GB, or if you can opt for the higher tiers as well).

As far as Best Buy, I don't know if he can move the phone from another line to his. I believe they're like Amazon & Walmart, where if you make any changes to your line for I believe 6 months, you can incur a pretty hefty charge (usually the difference of full retail & the subsidized price). Something to ask about before you sign up with them.

Sorry, I meant tiered or shared data. Thanks for bringing that up. According to a Best Buy Mobile rep, you can do it. I was trying to figure out a way to keep my unlimited and get the Inc4G. He first asked if I had another line that I could upgrade and then said I could add a line for an additional $10/mo and get the Inc4G on it, put my old Dare on that line and put the Inc4G on mine the same day. I didn't want another line so then he gave me the Buy Back program spiel, which he neglected to inform me of the fee. So maybe there is a fee, but he didn't mention it.

The fee I was referring to wasn't for Best Buy's Buyback program.

Places like Amazon Wireless, Wirefly, Letstalk (which is who Walmart uses), etc., have a clause in their terms that prevents customers from changing their plan for a certain period of time (usually 6 months). Apparently if the customer changes their plan in that period, the company doesn't get their commission/incentive from the wireless carrier. So they charge a fee to recoup the costs of the phone. Warranties are also a little wider. Usually, the company handles the warranty for around 1-3 months, and after that it's handled by the carrier.

Each company is a little different with their fees & warranty period, but those are the reasons I haven't gone with them before. If I need to change my plan, I don't want to be looking at a fee that rivals Verizon's ETF fee. But, I can't recall how Best Buy handles their phones. They may be different, but I just thought the OP should ask before they get in to deep.

They are offering it at the discounted price (I don't think it's been announced yet). Whatever it is, I'll take it.

I don't have insurance on the Incredible 2. I can't tell you how many hoops I had to jump through and talk my way into them allowing me to do this and upgrade. I pretty much blamed them because the OTA they sent out for the Incredible 2 ruined the phone. It wasn't my fault.

However, until I have the 4G LTE phone in hand I won't know if the plan will go through how they say it will. Fingers crossed. I'll keep you all updated.

After being scared by my software unstable Incredible 2 I am definitely going to go with this decision and GET THE INSURANCE!

As far as losing my unlimited data, I don't really care anymore. I never go over 2GB! I'll survive :p

Oh yeah, there is a catch. I have to buy a bundle from them for the phone. Whatever, I'll deal with it. I need a case, etc. anyway. They are doing me a huge favor.

Cool man, as long as you're not worried about losing your unlimited it's a good deal. If I had to guess, their discounted pricing will be $199, since the $149 price is only available if you get it online, not through Telesales or CS. But you should be eligible for a $50 mail in rebate. So you should get the phone for $150, you'll just have to wait for the rebate instead of instant like ordering it online.

On insurance, you might want to see if your homeowners or renters insurance has any provisions for covering it. My homeowners has a policy for things like this (phones, guns, etc.). It costs $36 a year, with $100 deductible, and covers loss, theft, accidental damage. It doesn't however cover software, but maybe you could go for Verizon's extended warranty and cover the rest of it through a policy like mine. Of course your insurance may cover software as well, so you may want to check into it. I believe you have 30 days after activation to add insurance/ warranty with Verizon. Good luck.
