Thanks for the info, I have a Linux background, however I feel a bit overwhelmed with rooting and this is my only phone, so mabye you can give me some info on how to ease into this. thanks

Best advice I can give you is to start a new thread in the all root section, many will walk you through the process and you could be rooted and running a custom 2.2 rom in about an hour. I would look at this thread first though [GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero - xda-developers This would be the long method. There are also a few one click root methods out there also, depending on your build number, androot, z4 root. Rom manager from the market is very helpful for flashing a recovery and making nandroids. Titanium backup Pro is highly recommended once you root, it also can backup applications and delete unwanted bloatware;)
