Upgrade to 2.1 in Australia?

I have been perfectly happy with my Hero using 1.5 until now, but am really keen to use the new Kindle App, which requires 1.6 or higher.

I don't have a Sprint, and so I can't use their upgrade to 2.1. There's a rumor going around that the upgrade will be available today on the HTC site for Australians, but given the punctuality of HTC with this kind of stuff before, I'm obviously not so sure.

I've never used the whole root thing (hadn't even heard of it before today), so am hesitant about doing that in case I stuff it up.

Basically, where to from here, do you think?

I got an email from HTC today saying the date for Australia is unconfirmed at this stage.

So I root'd today as I didnt want to wait any longer.

I called the Australian HTC hotline last night, and the guy told me they were postponing the release because of quality control, that they weren't happy with the release as it stands. I asked him how come the release was considered to be satisfactory for Europe, Sprint, the US, and pretty much everywhere else, but not considered satisfactory for Australia? At that point, he said that he couldn't understand what I was saying, that my English was too complicated, and then said goodbye.

This from HTC yesterday:

Hi Pepe,

Thanks for contacting HTC. We appreciate your support for our products. We appreciate your anticipation for the Android 2.1 upgrade on the HTC Hero. HTC will be providing a free update to Android 2.1 for Asia Pacific HTC Hero variants with ANZ customers receiving the update by mid to end of July. As we would like to ensure the best outcome for all HTC products, we found that the system could perform better after a more careful assessment process for its performance. Currently, we are on the final testing stages of the 2.1 upgrade.

Once it’s released you will be guided how it will install in your phone. You may give us a call at 1300 482 482. Our business hours are from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm SYDNEY Time, from Mondays to Saturdays and closed on Public Holidays. Thank you and have a great day!
