im an unrevoked user and want to upgrade my phone to 3.70 so for the last few days ive been reading and maybe i have overlooked the answer i need but if some one can help out it would be greatly appreciated.

i want to upgrade and ive read a few different ways to do it. what would be the easiest way to upgrade my evo and then reroot. if i dont back up will i lose all my information, contacts etc..

should i just upgrade then use unrevoked to reroot my phone?

You can find instructions on how to update, including the best methods to go about it here:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies-extras.html

It's in section 6 under "After Rooting". You will need to backup your apps/data, which you can do with titanium backup. Your contacts should be tied to your google account, so they will not be affected. Verify that you can access them through gmail, first, of course.

EDIT: you *can* unroot, accept the OTA, reroot, if you want, but it will update hboot, which will make previous nandroid backups useless. There is never a good reason to update hboot. Should you choose this route, though, you can use the same guide posted above. Just follow the instructions to unroot, accept the OTA, then root again like you did the first time. Like I said, I do not recommend this.

what would happen if i just did the ota update. it would take root away could i then just rerun the new unrevoked

If you just did the OTA update right now, it would (most likely) fail because you have a custom recovery. Even if you replace the custom recovery with a stock one, it's still not a great idea to accept an OTA while rooted. You could do that then rerun unrevoked, but it would be safer to unroot, update, then reroot. If you're that uncomfortable with manually updating everything, do it that way. But remember what I said about updating hboot. It's never really a recommended thing to do.

I was in the situation as you on what I should do regarding the OTA. I ended up flashing a rom which already has the update without updating the hboot, It's called Sprint's Lover Rom. With this, you're up to date, still rooted and none of that bloatware that was added. Best of both worlds :)

What Jiggy said. Just flash a ROM based on the latest update. You will likely have to flash radios but it is super simple. Your main question was "What is the easiest way...."????.....that is by far the easiest way. Also the safest because you won't be running your phone all the way out to stock and back. It may sound simple but there is a lot of things that can happen going back to stock and then rooting again. SImlpy flashing a ROM based on the latest update is the simplest and safest...THE END! And I am not contradicting what the Bomb said either. He was just simply answering your question.
