Upgraded from hero

I read the welcome message to lurkers, and I am really fascinated to see what the Shift will do once someone is able to land a overclocked kernel. Out of the box the shift received a 1432 benchmark score on Quadrant. This is amazing coming from a hero that was around 3-400. Anyway, the shift is a spritely and responsive phone. Battery life seems decent considering the processing power. The size of the phone is what convinced me to upgrade from the hero. It was only slightly thicker, but came with a slideout keyboard. This phone, I encourage everyone who is considering an upgrade to test one out. Brilliant display and to have 2.2 with sense is fantastic. I have to be honest, I am a huge fan of the preloaded news widget.:) Glad to be here; is there a introduction thread I should know about before posting? Any questions you have about the shift I would love to answer to the best of my knowledge!

Nope, no other special threads - post away and welcome to the forums!

I'm in process of trying to put this forum's first stickies together to help shepherd the fast-flowing news on this fun new phone.

Until then - welcome aboard - and I extend that to all our new posters - AndroidForums is loving it that so many are coming on board so quickly!

Remember, anyone with a red or green name badge is happy to get a private message (PM) if you have any questions about questions or just whatever.

I want to upgrade from a hero too.

What I want from the shift:

better call quality...the speaker phone on my hero is not very good

better pictures and much improved video camera. I've tried to film live music a couple times and sound capture was terrible.

The gps stops working on my hero every couple of days unless I turn the phone off and then back on. always seems to happen when I'm on the road and trying to yelp something.

I know the speed and display improvements are obvious.

hoping the batt life isn't any worse

going from android 1.6 to 2.2 ....yeah

no hdmi out is the only missing feature for me....

I'm going to bestbuy and have a look tonite...

I have a Hero running stock 2.1 I loved the Hero when I first got it as it was so much better than the HTC Touch which I had before. But the Hero slowly is becoming a nightmare. I have had to do so many factory resets only to have it go back to acting up.

I am up for an upgrade and I have tested out the EVO and Epic in the past and recently tested out the Shift. I was pleasently surprised about the Shift. Would be nice if it had a little bit more bells and whistles but I do think its a pretty solid phone.

Don't sell the Hero short:p Quadrant 500, Linpack 5.5:rolleyes: Oh, and btw, Gingerbread running quite nice on the Hero, no camera of course;)

Probably going to get the Shift next week, hopefully permanent root will be here soon. Looked at the phone today and was impressed:)

I will be upgrading from a Hero as well, only a few more short weeks..... I was torn between the Shift and the EVO, but after seeing the size compared to my current Hero I am all over the Shift. I have not rooted my Hero (after numerous tries it has been determined that my specific Hero does not like any other ROMS and will not function properly with anything but stock), but looking forward to be able to root the Shift to open it up as a hotspot.

I am due to upgrade also, I have a moment and cannot decide between the EVO or the Shift, definitely will not go with samsung again .

signal reception better/worse than hero ?

call voice quality/speakerphone better/worse than hero ?

I'm in the same boat as the OP. The Hero was, for lack of a better word, my "Hero" for a while. But then every other phone surpassed my beloved Hero in a matter of months. When the time came for me to upgrade, I felt I had two choices, OG EVO or EVO Shift. The size of the OG EVO was a turn off to me. I didn't (still kind of don't) have to have a physical keyboard, but it's nice. The processor is what made my final decision easier. Oh, that and the fact I got Best Buy to price match me at $119. I'm very happy with how responsive and quick the Shift is. Solid phone.

I to upgraded from my beloved hero. We had a love hate relationship. I rooted it with liquid sense as I love Sense and it got a little better. I had been eligible for an upgrade for awhile and could'nt quite see myself holding the evo up to my ear, although I was thoroughly impressed with it. So I went back and forth with I'm going to get it, no its just to big for me. Then came the shift. Once I got news of it and say the side by side comparison of it with the evo (its big brother) I went to BB and got it the day before launch at sprint. I love this phone. Although I never really cared If I had a physical KB or not it does come in handy for long documentation. It is fast, clean, well built, apps 2sd ready, fast and is Sense.

I am a passenger on the ditch the Hero train as well. I have coveted the OG Evo from afar patiently waiting for my upgrade. And now Evo Shift makes it's appearance to tempt me away. Why so many consider it ugly is an enigma to me. All smartphones are rectangles with either sharp or rounded edges. Just because the Shift has the nerve to sport a bit of chrome & color, defying the obligatory bland greys & blacks, it's to be tossed aside & eliminated from consideration? Personally, I find it more stylish than it's big brother or the Epic. And I've garnered enough evidence of the Samsung Galaxy S cheaper build quality issues (mic/gps/buttons not staying on) & slow/non-updates to eliminate Epic from the 4G pack. Super AMOLED is impressive, but it doesn't fix a device that won't work waiting indefinitely for updates. And the 480x800 rez looks sharper on the Shift's 3.6" screen than the OG Evo. How many people are making front facing camera an issue because they would actually use it for video chat? My guess is less than 1% compared to 99%+ for bragging rights. A quadrant test result of 1460 for the second generation 800 Ghz Snapdragon against OG Evo in the 1200's is the kicker for me, as HDMI out is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. If I didn't have to wait until April for my Sprint Premier Upgrade, I'd snap on it it right now. I know, no dual core Tegra 2 processor, but there's just no way to have the latest, greatest all the time unless you get a new phone every other month. Having said that, with the introduction of the new ARM Cortex A9 multicore processor & HTC working on it's own proprietary version of super AMOLED (Samsung will never let anyone lease theirs), I may find something more to my liking by Spring.

The more I use it the more I love it. The phone does everything I want it to do, except faster. Definitely worth it to check it out if you have a hero considering they are virtually the same thickness. This device is great!
