Help Upgrading system software

I have a HTC Desire and for the last 2 months my market app has not been working. I have discovered it is because my firmware version is 2.1. I followed the system software updates guidelines but for 2 days it has been flashing on and off saying updating but still no change. What else can I do??

Backup your phone and do a Factory data reset. Then connect to a wifi network and check for the update again.
