Root Upgrading the DHD to CM10.1

D4M3

Newbie
I'm gonna be using the CM10.1 nighly by pipeliner_ard on XDA, showthread.php?t=2073992

can't link cause first post.

The phone isn't mine, my friend has it, has informed me that there is a update available, as he's now on 2.3.3, and he has HTC Sense version 2.1.I will try to root it with AHHK and flash a recovery afterwards with ROM Manager, but how can I prepare myself in order something goes wrong?how can I tell which RUU i need?

I've told him to not update the phone, for now

I have no idea when it was shipped too, and what it was with, anyway for me to check that too?

I will be doing this from linux too, anyway to run a RUU from linux or will I have to go to windows?

Please anyone, this is very urgent. It's 5 AM now and I'm still thinking of what WILL go wrong(I just know it will)

hello...if you use AAHK i think that you mast be on 2.3.5 with sense 3.0 and your phone must be locked in every way, s-on, bootloader..other way AAHK won't be work...if you have all this, then is nothing afraid of, just do it...

and i'm on CyanogenMod 10.1 Nightlies by Mustaavalkosta and trust me, it's great rom

Hello and welcome D4M3 - thanks for joining!! :)

The AAHK will put a custom recovery on the phone, so no need to use ROM manager to flash one.

If you're using linux, then nothing should go wrong! RUU's are exe files, so I think you'd have to run that (should you need to) from a windows machine.

Before you root, could you give a bit more info about the phone? When you boot in to HBOOT (power off completely, then power back on with the volume down button held down), what dos it say?

Hope this is of any help

That should be of help... hang in there... we'll try to get you sorted :)

Gonna hve to bear with us - I'm currently in work and am going to be out later. I know that there are others who should be able to step in though :)

The aahk is a complex, very complete piece of software. It is prepared for literally any combination of software and firmware it can encounter. The only issue you would have to worry about, would be if this were actually in inspire running on AT&T's latest software, as there is no temp root for that.

Since this is a DHD, you should not have that problem. You don't need to do any preparation, just run the aahk and it will do it all for you.

Using Linux is a good idea, you will likely have no issues that way.

Afterward(and you are soff/superCID), I would use the latest WWE sense 3.0 ruu to upgrade. I can go more into detail later on this, I am at work at the moment also. :)

So just run it as it is now with 2.3.3?Also why should I upgrade to a newer HTC ROM, I just want to flash CM via the recovery.Does AHHK install one for me or do I have to do that myself? Thanks for your help so far.

Yup! Just run that sucker. :)

You will want to upgrade afterwards because the aahk is installing an older, exploitable radio. You don't necessarily want to leave the older firmware on the phone. Newer is better ;)

Can you link me to the latest one? There are plenty of em on shipped-roms.Also can you still answer me if AAHK installs a recovery itself, or do I need to do that on my own?

best recovery for DHD is 4ext, and you have to installed.. :)

Even if I manage to create a sh*t storm, will I still be able to restore via a RUU?it will just return status to S-ON, from what I read.

I don't know, I never thought about it :P but i think that you can..
like i said, your phone must be s-on, bootloader locked and than AAHK will work :)

Shipped ROMs for the .exe file

Shipped ROMs for a .zip you can rename PD98IMG and flash in hboot

and yes,the aahk will install a recovery, but even if you didnt run the ruu,its worthwhile to upgrade to ext 4. aahk installs clockwork, wich there is nothing wrong with, but ext is a very nice, touch screen recovery. ext 4 can be installed easily in hboot after the ruu upgrade.

yes... as long as you do not fudge up the bootloader,or the radio, you can almost always restore to a working phone with an RUU. an ruu will not turn s on,however. what the aahk gives you is a radio s-off,wich remains until you purposely remove it. thats why you should run the wwe ruu to ugrade your firmware after the aahk has s-off'ed and superCIDed the phone.

the ruu will overwrite the recovery that aahk installs, wich is ok. once s-off,its not doing any security checks, and recovery is easily installed a PD98IMG in hboot. at that point, you can install cm10,or install superuser if you wanted to run the stock unbranded software. the WWE firmware is a good,all-around radio to be on,IMO,and a good choice for a permanent selection, unless a particular rom recomends something else.

so,basicaly you will:
1)run aahk with linux
2)run the wwe ruu
3)reinstall recovery in hboot(download here: PD98IMG_ace_recovery_ext_4.zip )
4)install rom or superuser with recovery :)

just holler if you have any questions :)

Yeah.
Forgot to mention that. Thanks Scotty.
Buy whenever I have had to run a RUU, I installed CWM, loaded up a rom, and then installed 4EXT

Thanks for all your help guys !

Running CM10 now, flashed it with CWM, I don't really require touch screen recovery, or all the extra features it provides, CWM is just enough.

Didn't update the RUU as I wanna see battery life now and after if I do decide to flash it anyways. Thanks again for all your trouble, really helpful community you have here.

Although, it shows just 384mb ram available, in both apps and settings. Is this a bug or something?

EDIT: Seems rewiping the cache even after I flashed the ROM did the trick.I got my 615MB shown now.

Ookay, can someone merge this post with my above ones, so it doesn't seem as cluttered(I had to, in order to bump it, otherwise it doesn't show as I changed anything)

The battery now averages 5hours, which is a lot LESS.It used to do atleast 12 hours with mild gaming and wifi, now it doesn't even do half.5h and 34 mins on 8% left.I even changed governor to conservative, but that only boosted like an hour or so.Anyway I can flash a newer radio over CM, without using the RUU?

actually, what i think is dangerous is mix n matching different radios, hboots, and other bits of firmware. ive seen this cause anything from bootloops to soft bricks on other devices

the DHD is an old enuff device it does not contain the complex firmware other new devices have,so it honestly should be fine to update bits and pieces within reason, but i try to give the safest advice as i can,i dont want to brick anyones device

the safest way to update IMO,would be as follows:
1)make a backup of your current rom
2)run the wwe 3.0 ruu linked above
3)install a recovery as a PD98IMG in hboot
4)restore your backup

if you prefer to use CW over ext 4,heres a file to install that(rename PD98IMG): cwm-5.0.2.7-ace.zip

updating by using the full ruu will ensure any other bits of firmware,as well as the radio and bootloader, are all compatible.

if you do wish to just update your radio, you can do that by flashing in hboot as well.

heres the radio for the 3.12.405.1 sense 3.0 wwe ruu:
PD98IMG-12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M.zip

again, rename PD98IMG and flash in hboot. a bad radio flash can brick your phone,so make sure you double check the md5,wich should be:
md5: PD98IMG-12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M.zip 34126c25d36320647de1a254ac8f830c

newer radio certainly cant hurt your battery life, tho it may not provide the boost youre looking for, either. its likely that the issue is simply cm10 in early stages of development,vs your old stock rom wich had been around awhile and seen untold hours of use and testing. :)

let us know how it goes :)

Interesting. Did not know you could do this.

the safest way to update IMO,would be as follows:
1)make a backup of your current rom
2)run the wwe 3.0 ruu linked above
3)install a recovery as a PD98IMG in hboot
4)restore your backup

i thot we had had this conversation when you first rooted,lol... i remember making the radio zip i just linked up for you,as you dint really want to use the entire ruu to update either ;)

No, really happy with just flashing the Radio. The RUU tip... I think that is what the guys who have rotation issues when flashing a JellyBean ROM do to fix it. I was always under the impression that if I flash an RUU I lose root.
