Upgrading to 2.1

I'm a real newbie on terminology here so bear with me. My hero's firmware is 1.5. Do I understand correctly that the latest is 2.1?

How do I get there? Is it a lot of manual work or is it pretty straight forward.

2.1 is the latest for the Hero. It's also the only one that Sprint or HTC will put on the Hero. That being said, since you're on 1.5, I would Root your phone and then install a 2.1 ROM. If you like 1.5, then the custom ROM will allow you to return to it if you do not like 2.1. You can run the RUU found on the Sprint and HTC website to upgrade to 2.1 without rooting, but you will lose the ability to return to 1.5. Ultimately the choice is yours, but the root and then ROM method is the way I went because I like to have options.
