Upgrading to gingerbread

If I want to upgrade my Desire HD to 2.3 do I have to root it to do? And after rooting can I get every paid app for free?

If you want gingerbread now, you have to root, but HTC is going to push out an update to 2.3. Rooting won't change what you pay for an app.

I was considering putting 2.3 gingerbread on my 2 day old HTC desire hd as well...

Would I have to install everything again and configure all my email clients or is there a backup and restore procedure?

I was on the iphone4 and upgrading was simple... The software backed up all settings, photos, media, SMS, emails... Then restored everything after the update..

I loom forward to comments as well on the procedure and answer to the backup? If it is an option.

There's a backup app called Titanium Backup that allows you to back everything up -

Titanium Backup ? root - Android app on AppBrain

If you wait for the official HTC update that will keep all your data and settings, but installing your own one is a different story all together as you're overwriting what's already on there.

If your phone is only 2 days old, I'd question why you'd want to put Gingerbread on anyway? You'd void the warranty and from my experience, Android is much better with HTCs Sense overlay.

It is doable, it's just not something I'd do with a phone that new.

Appreciate your feedback... yes i will wait for the official release as there are a good few updates by the looks of the spec reviews. getting the dhd now to how i want it now i found out about launcherpro... makes so much difference.

Im with El, wait till your phone gets to 4-6 months before renewal then mess with your DHD, im gonna wait till the updates dries up for the DHD then I'll root the beggar to install the latest and greatest Andy OS (likely to be some incarnation of 3.x i'd imagine...)

but till then, im more than happy with 2.2 and HTC sense overlay, im in no rush for 2.3

Since were talking about Gingerbread. When do will HTC release the official 2.3 update?

there was mention a time after the S series update to the desire gets pumped out, so look towards the june-ish period (i know it seems ages away...)
