I'm going to upgrade to the newest version of SC, but was curious if it would be the same as when I upgraded from 2.1, where I lost all my texts and data. I thought I read somewhere that it wouldn't, but I wanted to make sure.
You can try flashing without wiping data, if it takes a dump, then wipe. Titanium can back up your apps, and there are apps on the market to back up sms if you want.
