Help Urgent help needed: too much data usage

HI ,
my new wildfire is getting on my nerves lol i got it on a contract withy 500mb which in my opinion quite a lot. Anyway so i go outside and i have downloaded 3g watchdog just to check i dont go over my limit and i made sure i had nothing to do with the web open then i look at my data i had been out for 2 mins and i had used 1.7mb rapidly rising all in one go to 2.4 to 3.7 in seconds. I turned my phone straight off ... what is causing my phone to use all of this data so quickly ?

1. you need to turn off background syncing. the apps will want to update because that is thier design.. to keep you in touch.
home screen > menu > settings > accouts & Sync > uncheck everything!

2. you should of gotten a plan with unlimited data...Sprint or Tmobile

They are not running. They are just cached, thats how android works. Using task killers actually uses more battery. When you kill the apps, Android will just open them back up again to cache them, using more battery than if you just leave them alone.

As for your data issue, check Menu-Settings-Accounts and sync, and check to see whats syncing in the background. Also, go through EVERY app in you phone, check the settings to make sure its not staying logged in, or running the the background.

Also, whenever possible, use WiFi for downloading apps. Check settings for any apps you have that download data... a lot of them (NewsRoom comes to mind) have a setting to sync only when there's a WiFi connection.

Though, I'm with dan330 on this one; get an unlimited data plan. It's much more fun to use your phone when you're not constantly having to watch your data.

what a pain.. to have to watch your limit.. and worry so much..
for a phone that is designed to be connected...
for your live to be easier.. and get more info.. and info = data = power.

what are you paying on your ATT month bill?? with the 500mb limit?

huh turning sync off should let you go on the market. you probably turned off backround data
go to settings and accounts and sync leave backround data checked and auto-sync off.
you should also update to 2.2.

Thanks guys it was background data I was turning off lol one.more problem I am still using some data as for example i close fb then close in task killer and it re opens in task killer again .... anyone know a solution for this

you only pay a total of $15 a month.. plus tax and fees....

wow... maybe you should up it to the 2GB limit...for????

Dont use task killers... forget about the apps that are in the background...
all you have to worry about is data.. and if you have the background and sync turned off... then it is good to go

what o.s are you using 2.1 or 2.2
you can turn internet off totally in 2.2 in 2.1 you need a app to do it.
APN on off there are a few pick one that works for you.
i would recommend updating to 2.2 though.
it you are on 2.2 press and hold the power button and click on mobile network.

@Dan330; I suspect that that this a a typical UK

wow.. great price on plan!
that includes all other features.. phone and text and gps and visual voicemail etc...

wish we had same in USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
plans are $70 and up to $130 with all features for major carriers.
some small regional carriers are as cheap as $40

i can not seem to be under 1GB a month in data. This month I will be above 3.5GB.

I love the HTC Wildfire, but the data usage is pain in azz! And I think no remedy to that unless you get unlimited data. In South Africa that is a dream !!

Make sure you don't have any news apps installed. I downloaded and ran TrafficStats Lite app and found out that the ABC News app that I had installed had used 990 MB in 2 weeks, even though I had NOT USED IT EVEN ONCE in that time. Uninstalled ABC News app, and now it's fine. If you like news apps, downloaded and run TrafficStats Lite app to see how much data they use before keeping them, but ABC News app is a definite No-No for limited data plans.
