Help Urgent Help needed with 2.1 =(

This driver isn't for normal usb connection. This is the driver needed fro debugging mode and ADB. Just trying to cover all possibilities.

If you cant uninstall normally you can use the microsoft installer clean up utility, just google it. (assuming you are using windows)
 
Ahh confusing.. ok so I just uninstalled the SWupdate again.. rebooted.. Made sure no drivers were installed.. However, everytime I go to programs folder there is a SAMSUNG folder there ... with a uninstall file and a file (2 items).. I hit uninstall and then I deleted them because it wouldn't go away. I downloaded the 64-bit usbdeview and i did see three items 2 android items and one item that was my drive letter F where i would mount sd card.. I deleted all Samsung and ANDROID usb items. Now I need to reinstall SWUPDATE. GRRRR... I really want this to work. I know it has worked on my PC prior because when 2.1 came out I flashed it using this pc and had not one problem.
 
Once you get the swupgrade installed and running with the phone plugged in....right click on Computer and go to properties, then click device manager at the top left. Under the Universal Serial Bus Controlers list the phone should be listed as Samsung USB Composite device, make sure there isn't an exclamation mark on it(or anywhere for that matter)....if so the drivers arent installed correctly
 
Ok.. so it looks like the USB drivers installed..no error .. HOWEVER

This is what I see...

On the left side "detect port" and on the other side disconnected.

and NEXT grayed out ... I cannot go on. I looked to see if USB is correctly installed in device manager ... and no exclamation marks.

Please tell me what to do next.. Thanks.
 
If you can there should be a factory reset option, see if that does anything. If not or if you cant even get into recovery install the swupgrade on your xp machine and try it there. Doesn't explain why its not working on you win7 machine but atleast it will get you phone back working (hopeuflly :confused:).
 
Ok on a whole different port now... i am on downloading screen .. How long should i wait for movement, etc..

it says "ready" left side com 5 connected on right.

IT MUST HAVE been my PORT all along.... Its downloading now.. =) Thank you so much.. I am so scared to root now.. Geesh.. I expected this with rooting would take ohhhh 20 mins.. I've been here for 4 hours. OMG. THANK YOU!
 
Do you know anything about root/rom? I've seen videos on recovery/root .. however... the rom thing I am slightly confused.. I was going to do the "kitchen" but if I put recovery/root prior I don't need to put that in my customized package because I want my recovery to stay the same..
 
Sure i know alot about root. Im not sure what video's you've seen but the easiest way to root is to install a recovery (flash using the swupdate tool) and then download an update.zip from the kitchen. You have to choose a kernel to get root, the recovery you can leave default if dont want to install a different one, the same goes for anything for that matter....just read the options carefully and if have any questions just ask. I'll be glad to share any knowledge on the subject i have.
 
Ok.. I am going to start attempting this.. I have no clue what alot of that stuff in the kitchen is... LOL.. I do know some stuff but when it comes to phones I feel really stupid. I've never rooted a phone before.. I have the first part down.. .. I am going to start this.. Hopefully my USB problems are worked out .. makes me nervous now!
 
That was the hardest part, more of a fluke than anything. I've read a couple posts trying to figure this problem out and it seems like either restarting the phone in download mode multiple times or just unplugging and plugging in the usb eventually gets it to assign a com port and work. Should go to show you tho, not really much you can fix atleast with this phone as far as rooting/installing roms.
 
ROOTED! I did it! YEAH! Ok so for the most part all was simple.. However, most of my time and frustration was do to my USB drivers not working properly.. . Even when doing recovery ... USB wouldn't detect. Finally, it did after another 30 mins of unplugging/plugging.

Question now is ... what if a week from now I want to do a different ROM/Kernel. Like maybe I want to do tethering and adding something else? What if I want a new theme only?? What steps would I take to do this. Do I have to start fresh. Do I go into recovery and do something like uninstall current ROM? Is it simple as just putting a new .zip on my SD card? What if later I want to just uninstall root period (highly unlikely but if something goes wrong with phone and I need it back) how would I do this.???

Sorry if my questions are confusing.

I APPRECIATE your insight and help!!!! I've been reading the forums since February and never really needed help until NOW. Thank you SO so MUCH! :):confused:

If you use my method, you can theme without using the computer at all =D Same thing with flashing Kernel's, but not ROM's
