Usable memory for apps?

I have an HTC Desire and love it except that it has such a puny amount of memory for apps. I haven't rooted but I have rejigged it so that as much as possible is installed to the SD card. But I am still having to delete apps in order to install others and can't even consider installing larger apps.

It's upgrade time soon and my current shortlist (of 1) consists of the Galaxy S2. Before I make a decision though I want to be sure that I'm not jumping out of the frying pan in to the fire. The S2 has 16Gb memory and can take an SD card too. But I assume that not all of the internal memory can be used to install apps in the same way as the Desire? Please can someone tell me how much space is available for apps on the S2 before you have to install them on the SD card?

Internal Memory on the SGSII is 2015.82MB and is the default storage area for app's. I have around 120 app's installed and still have 1356.91MB free.

There is also a further 11780.03MB of phone storage built in as well.

Many thanks for such a clear explantion. It looks as though there should be plenty of space for me compared with the Desire!
