Usage issue with stock messaging app

Hi. I have an xperia l, running 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Can somebody advise me, if, using the stock messaging app, I'm reading a message from someone who isn't in my phonebook, and I want to call that person, how do I do so (without first saving them to my phonebook)?

On all previous phone's I've had, "call sender" is a clear and obvious menu option.

Let's say I think the message is a valid communication but I'm not sure who it's come from, so I want to call the sender and check who they are?

I'm on 4.3, but when I'm looking at a message, there's a phone in the upper right corner (to the left of the trash can), in the border above the message. That will call them.

Kitkat aosp messaging app has the call icon at the top too. Im surprised Sony's doesnt.
Hopefully someone with an xperia knows how its done

On my Xperia (and I'll presume they use the same messaging app), if I tap the number in the top left corner of the screen, it asks me what I want to use to call the number with.

Have you tried that?

OP, if any of these suggestions aren't helping, are you able to post a screen shot of what you're talking about? That might enable us to offer other suggestions.
