USB adaptor problems

Usually in the file manager, they aren't named what you'd think. Look for something that contains USB, SD, Ext or something similar. It typically isn't named what you'd think.

Two things to try...
1) Restart the note after you've connected the usb drive
2) Use ES File Explorer as your file manager. The usb drive should be visible if you click on the Favourites icon

Hope this helps

I had the same problem with my digital camera that was connected using the USB connector. Worked perfectly after a reboot, but only once. Turned out that I had installed Avast Mobile and that blocked the device from being recognized in subsequent tries. I deinstalled Avast, and now everything works great. You may have similar software designed for security that is causing the device recognition.

I'm not sure if it's the same for the Note, but I'm pretty sure when I used my USB adapter on my original Galaxy Tab 10.1 the documentation with the adapter said to attach the USB to the adapter before connecting it to the tablet.
