The USB connection option keeps going missing from the notification bar on my Orange HTC Hero 2.1 (standard ROM). Restarting the phone brings it back temporarily and it will work, allowing me to select 'disk drive' to connect it as a USB storage device to my PC, but then after a day or so it disappears again. I've got no idea why.
