Help USB Connection Problems

Hi, lately I've been experiencing USB connection problems. A few weeks ago, once I connect my device to the PC via USB cable, the "USB connected" symbol appears in my notification bar. But now, it does not appear at all, even though my phone is charging. Please help.

restart your pc,
connect usb cable to your pc & device
switch off your phone, and windows will automatically reload driver,
then switch on your phone again, device are connected to pc. done.

Switching my phone on and off again worked, not because the PC reloaded the driver (I think, though it may well have done so) but because the android device checked the SD card (so said a notification) and when the checking had ended, I was able to proceed to access the USB.
