Help USB for International GS3

Newbie
Hi

Kies doesn't work or if it does the wifi connection gets cut off when backing up then everything goes back to zero...

It doesn't take USB, don't know why but it doesn't. Found few advice on the net to DL Samsung USB drives but don't know which one to DL. They seem to list the DL site according to your phone provider such as AT&T and T-Mobile which are all for US and for UK. I am in Hong Kong and my provider is PCCW so I don't think it's a use for me. Any USB driver for any-phone-providers??? - why is it different by the phone providers I don't understand?!

Then I found the Youtube video of backup app called My Backup, but it talks about SD card I don't think my device has one? So even if I DL that app, I don't know where to store it. (beside they talk of rooting... well, I don't really know what rooting or jailbreaking and I do not really want to do those)

The reason why I need the backup is I shattered the screen so need to take it into the service centre for repairing.

Oh great, after 3 hours solid working on my PC / my mobile, Kies started backing up my data!!! But then who know when the wifi connection gets cut off and then everything goes back to zero again(!)........... sigh.

ANY, ANY easy way to back up??? And why did Android make it so hard to backup when.... I hate to say it but Apple made it so easy on iTune?? (Yeah well, then I should've bought iPhones... right?)

And really, Kies thing looks the easiest it's just .... the connection is not reliable. Any ways to make my USB cable to work? (Bluetooth doesn't read my device either!!)

SUCKS!! :(

Grrr.. It only finishd 1% of DL.... USB must be faster. Know any ways I can enable the USB use please? I bought the generic USB cables (two, different kind) from the shop but are there any GS3 specific ones? Both the cables charges the powers but, doesn't read on Kies...

Cheers.

Phone: GS3
PC: TOSHIBA Satellite, Windows XP

Hi

I wrote on my other thread asking other question but my USB doesn't work. IT charges power but it doesn't get read on Kies. Some web site advice to DL the Samsung USB Driver but those are for AT&T ad T-Mobile and provider specific. I live in Hong Kong and my provider is PCCW so those US and UK provider ones are not use for me. - and why does the driver have to be provider specific??

Any ways I can make my USB cable work please?
Cheers!!

My previous question about backup issue:

http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s3/705995-back-up-gs3-android-so-hard.html

Merged your 2 threads and I'll do a little research for ya:)

And welcome to the forums too :D

Thanks! Yeah I will continue researching too but I am way nackered for tonight.... 4 hours... I will highly likely need USB because this wifi things is going too slow and tomorrow, I have to cut the connection and take my PC to work, so... if it's not done by tomorrow morning.. it's all over again.... :(

Welcome to the forum

usb drivers can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655286
Since you're not rooted I'd use this app to backup your apps
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup&hl=en

Thanks for the two info!! Had a quick look, will need to depend on it when my Kies fail... So hope it won't!!

(Because I need wait for the Kies to finish (if it does...) backing up on wifi first to try DL the driver)

One question, I have never used the Cloud, never store anything. I don't mind paying for it but for example, can I just use one time (so pay for one month) and stop it? Because as long as I finish reparing my shattered screen and put all the backed-up date back into my phone, I won't need to use it. Or... do you recommend to keep my data by paying monthly rolling... just for just-in-case....?? (if my phone loses all the data or is it too much to think?)

Or if there are any good free Cloud, appreciate if you could tell me.

Cheers!

So, my 5th or 10th or 20th or I forgot but the attempt to get connected with Kies failed again... Looks like I got USB drive you told me to DL already when I DL the Kies but I removed it once, added the one you sent me above, tried, and didn't do a thing. It kept "Connecting" forever.

But now I found that my mobile takes SD card and I found my old SD card that goes into it so I inserted it. Any ways I can backup on my SD card??

Searched the web of course, not easy answers. All I got was SD card doesn't somehow work on GS3. Or if there was method provided, it wasn't easy like step 1 to step 10....

I am giving it up and taking it to Samsung Service Center tomorrow with my PC and SD card and USB cable and let them do it....

There MUST be ways to easily backup. So many people using gs3 and I see little girls (high school girls) using these! How do they manage the backup if this was THIS difficult!! I don't understand why my USB doesn't work, I tried on two computers and two different cables, DOESN'T WORK.

So I don't know if it's Kies problem or....

And so whatever I did for SD card, it just popped the "failed" message on my mobile.

Is GS3 made to be so hard on doing a backup or what?!?!?!?!

Please don't make me regret I didn't buy iPhone!!!!!

Its really simple to back up apps and their settings if you root it and you can back up a mirror image of the phone as it is if you install custom recovery but i agree.. there should be ways to do this without "hacking" the phone.
The problems youre having seem to be a combination of Kies being a crap programme and not having the driver installed. When u plug a new device into the pc, it should ask if you want it to search for drivers. If you have the drivers for the s3 installed, when you plug it in, a window should appear on the pc asking what you want to do with it.
If thats happening but Kies isnt working, try uninstalling it (kies), rebooting pc and installing again. Kies is just a total pain!
If its only apps youre worried about, when you get your s3 back, when you turn it on and put in your gmail login, it should ask if you want to install all the apps you had over wifi. The app settings/game progress will be lost though

Hi thanks. :)

OK, so the Kies are shitty. I read that on the web.... Some people complain about iTune but at least iTune's ready-to-use and no fail!

I HAVE the driver, I think, I had it when I installed Kies but Shotgun84 told me the site to DL the driver so I uninstalled the driver it came with Kies and installed the one s/he told me, then rebooted my PC.

Still not working.

My USB charges the power so it's connected. And when I plug it into my PC with USB cable the pop up says Windows WORD file to open or Camera and Scanner Wizerd to open, sorry, I don't remember the actual content as I shut my other computer I was working on with this off now...

And the pop up has my devise name of my gs3! But I don't see any folder icon to open... just the WORD file icon and camera wizerd icon....

Gmail, huh? I was just working on it. So......... All the data I want to transfer to my mobile after reparing my screen are, contacts, SMS, apps and its settings, photos. I think? So would Gmail be enough?

But...... yeah there are few buts...... so tomorrow I will go to Samsung's service centre and will ask how I can do this through Gmail.

Thanks.
At least though.... Android community is working and helpful!! :)

Oh and about rooting. Some say it's just a click away some say it's not.... so, again, I will ask about this at the service centre though... I don't know what exactly "rooting" means but if it's like Jailbreaking then I wonder if the official Samsung service centre even recommends it?

Will see....

Rooting is pretty much like jailbreaking and it voids your warantee so it may be something you dont want to do and the service centre definately wont recommend it. All Google will back up is your contacts and (im guessing its Google) your apps (but not their settings [app data])
To back up your pics, if the pc wont do it via the driver then download Dropbox app and upload them to that (the app may already be on your phone)

Cool, then if the service centre doesn't provide me what I want let me try the rooting...... some say it's one click away some say it's complicated... on the web.

I actually managed to get all the pics out by Bluetooth.
(Yes so BT works but not with Kies, Grrrr!!!)
So I guess I can pop them back into my mobile with dropbox, thanks for the tips!

;)

No problem man. Yeah rooting is only a few clicks away. Check out the "all things root" section at top of the forum if u decide to do that

It might be that your USB mode on the phone is not set to media device. When you plug in the phone, drag down the notification bar and choose the option that isn't camera. Might work.

Hey

How do I turn on USB mode on my mobile? Do you mean by Thethering? I didn't know this existed so last night I clicked the one for USB. It failed. On Kies, when I uncheck this, it goes "Connecting..." for hours. (lol) If I check this, Kies doesn't even try to read anything.

If this is not the case, could you tell me how to enable this USB thing on my mobile?? Thanks!

Hmm, other ppl are talking about this check on USB on notification page but... Am I missing something?? Can't find it!

Hmm, OK so I am learning day by day (good, at least!) that Kies is never meant to be developed to work anyway. That's what everyone says on the net.

So I will forget about it and will search alternative solution.

But the USB... also, starting to sounds like (on the net) that Samsung never meant to try to connect their phones with USB either...

So back to my original title. I think Samsung made it impossible to backup officially. Made it rooting is the only way, so that it voids warranty so that they don't have to warrant. Conspiracy theory!

Will go to their service centre this afternoon. Will see what they have to say or can do about that!

Will be back.

Its the same with all androids tbh mate. There really should be an official way of backing up a whole phone. Dont know if its because its a piracy risk or what
Its maybe because, unlike Apple, theres so many different phones and android versions being used (fragmentation)

Yes there should be!!
Does iTune do that btw? Everything? - I used to use iTouch but never backed-up anything.

And those of you here talking about rooting the phone and getting things like Titanium, does it backup all the settings and basically everything too??

All done:

So I got my screen replaced (us$150) at Samsung service centre. Got the protection (us$10) which I didn't have previously when I dropped and shattered the screen. Was a BIG mistake!

Since my USB read my gs3 as a camera device, I had backed-up my photos in my PC anyway. So now using Dropbox to put them all back in. - thanks for that tip!

And contacts are synced with gmail and hotmail and facebook and whatsup so I think the basics are covered. Calenders, well, the guy at the service centre said I need to sync each event with gmail and there is no ways to sync all at once. Bugger, but not a catastrophic loss.

The biggest catastrophic loss it seemed I had was the points I collected in few games..... that's it. First world problems!! :D

But now, well, all set to use my phone again and I am rested. :)
However, for the future reference I will look into about root/titanium too....

Thank you so so much everyone who replied me!!!!!!!!!!!!! xxxxx

:) ;) :D

Glad youre fixed mate :) that was fast!
Yeah only by rooting or using the Carbon app you can back up app data like settings and game progress.
Did all your apps download automaticly when you started the phone and logged in?
Ive never owned an iphone or any apple product... its not really my style but i think with an iphone you can save an image of the whole phone to itunes or something.
Actualy, the most of what ive learned about iphones has been from using s3 forums lol. There seems to be a huge number of people who left iphone for android with the s3. Im not naive... i know probably 90% of these people didnt even know or think about what android means or stands for.. they just saw the s3 as the "next big thing" but its all good.
The only thing that pisses me off is when people change from iOs (iphone) or RIM (blackberry) to android and then moan that it didnt do what their old phone did and try n make an android phone look/act like their last phone lol... its like.. if it was that important how your old phone did things then why not do a lil bit of research before choosing one with a completely different operating system
