Root USB host is REEEEAAAL!

I just hope they eventually update the xoom so that you don't have to root to get it.

I totally agree. I don't want to root my Xoom right out of the box. But I would like USB hosting.

I thought the most interesting quote from the above article was this one:
The only caveat I can think of is that YMMV on thumb drives - some might require more power than the Xoom can supply

This concerens me a bit. It sounds like its not just that the Xoom was not enabled yet and may be some day - it is not designed to do this and Moto has no intention of enabling this on future Xooms. Huge dissapointment for me here.

That has always been the concern, but if two way data is there (must be) why not use USB 2.0 standard and voltage?

64gb thumbdrives would be the big test. They work great on the Gtablet and draw negligible extra juice (I have two of different brands).

wait, r u guys saying that i wont b able to plug in an external hard drive cause the xoom wont be able to power it? then whats the point of usb hosting?
all i ever wanted was a tablet that could play my 1080p mkv vids from my external hd, and i thought the xoom was it. :/

What kind of external hard drive? Most besides the ones designed to be portable have their own power source. Thumb drives and "portable" drives don't have their own power source, thus the problem.

I doubt Moto will ever enable USB hosting on the Xoom and I have little confidense that the hack that is reported is robust enough to trust.

Wait for the Toshiba or one of the others coming soon. Thats what I am doing. I am still open to the Xoom but will wait longer to see if Toshiba or others pan out better.

There are drive enclosures that have a separate power source for this purpose.
