USB storage does NOT work: "Natively" (File transfer is possible when rooted)

Stickmount, the app being used to mount the external devices in the tests I've mentioned, has been updated. Apparently it was a permissions bug that was preventing people from opening files on the external devices - it has now been confirmed to work even without external power.

Good news for anyone who intends to root :)

Yeah, I beleive that standard USB chargers will provide 1 amp from a socket but a PC USB socket only produces 0.5 amps, so that makes sense.

But, would that matter? It's going to charge much slower off a PC, but so long as the device has enough charge to turn on, you should be able to use the device whilst it's plugged into the PC.

Standard USB is 500 mA. Wall sockets chargers can provide whatever they want, but there's no "standard" for wall socket chargers. Some provide 1A, because the manufacturer designed them that way... or 2A, or 750 mA, or anything really :)

The device needs to have more than just charge to turn on. It's extremely likely that a device with a 7" screen and the processing power of the N7 will require more power than a 500 mA charger can provide during normal operation. So the device will probably take a trickle charge and eventually charge up if you have the screen off and the device is idle, but while in use, you're likely to still be draining the battery with a 0.5A charge. It'll discharge slower than when not plugged in, but it'll still discharge.

My TouchPad does this. If I plug it into the computer and use it, it will drain - slower than when not plugged in, but it'll still drain. If I shut the screen off and am not doing any file transfers or whatever, it'll very slowly charge up.

That makes sense. If tabelts are chewing through a full charge faster than phones with 3/4 times smaller batteries, then I can see how 0.5mA wouldn't be enough to charge a running tablet.

Exactly, my GNex with a factory 1 amp charger is very slow to charge if I have the screen on, and loses ground when connected via USB. Screen off it will charge from dead to ~80% within an hour on the wall charger.
