Help USB Storage/Internal Memory

Tazzy1

Lurker
Recently after some automatic updates on applications, I've been getting messages saying my devices memory is full. Curiously, I checked my storage on my settings, and 3 different types of storage came up; Internal Memory, USB Storage, and SD Card. Now SD card is obvious to me, but how does internal memory and USB Storage work?

My Internal Memory was full and thats why updates couldn't occur, after deleting a few unused applications, the problem was sorted again, but now its full because of the amount of applications I have. Why does my phone save applications to Internal Memory, and not USB Storage? The USB storage is completely empty.

My Internal Memory has 1.95gb capacity which is near full, whereas my 11.5gb capacity on USB Storage hasn't been touched.

What I want to do is make applications automatically save to USB Storage so I have more capacity to download as many applications and not worry about storage or updates.

Help would be appreciated, thanks.

I have a cell phone, a Samsung galaxy ST5880...I recently upgraded de SD card to 8 MB, I have deleted several programs I had installed...and I am having a similar problem as yours!!!!

I have a Galaxy S2 (i777) with over 100 apps installed and have only used about a quarter of the 1.97 GB of internal storage. Might i ask how many apps you have?

There are a couple of things you can try to free up some of the space. First, go to menu>settings>applications and then press menu>sort by size. This will show you the largest space users. If you tap the app, you might see an option to move it to SD card. This will move a good chunk of the app to the internal SD card partition (not the actual MicroSD card). You could also try clearing the caches of some of the biggest data users like maps and your browser. You might also consider setting limits on SMS messages, since the databases for this and mail accounts tend to grow very large especially if you send a lot of media and images.

Move2SD moves parts of the apps to the EXTERNAL microSD card for me. IT will be kept in the android_secure folder which you can view and browse via PC when connected as USB mass storage.

Small apps like Angry Birds (20MB) or Where's My Water (45MB) are stored fully in the 1.9GB internal memory. You can move around 90% or so of that into the external microSD.

The USB storage is for your use to store music, documents, etc. Big games will have their data here as well. For example Fifa12 where 1.2GB will be kept in the USB storage and only say 10MB in the internal memory. Move2SD will only move that 10MB and will not touch the 1.2GB which can't be moved unless rooted.

SO to clear your internal memory, use move2SD. Go to Settings/Manage Applications and under the On SD tab, you can tap on any app and choose to move2SD. Any app with the tick beside it is already in the microSD.

Cheers
