Help USB Tethering not working

So when I tether my phone to my pc the internet only works for a couple minutes and then I lose the connection and I have to disconnect it and re-connect to get it working again and then it only works for a couple minutes.

I used to have this with o2 on my old nokia. My thoughts at the time were that o2 some how were working out I was tethering, (which is not allowed according to their terms and conditions) and disconnecting me.

Instead of tethering, I connect the phone to the laptop as "Charge Only" and then use "Wifi Hotspot" to share the connection, though I am now on Vodafone

I solved the problem by unplugging the ethernet cable from the back of my computer. I think the computer was getting confused by having two connections plugged in at the same time.
