Help USB Tethering

When I start USB tethering from my phone, it takes FOREVER for my computer to go from "Identifying..." to "Internet access" and allow me to access the web.

Does anyone know why this might be the case?

I use my phone this way all the time. So here is my two cents worth.

It is not the phone, it is the service providers process of identifying you as a valid customer.

I tried a third party tethered application once that used debug mod, there was no wait at tether. But after about one hour of use it appeared that service provider throttled my use to about 50K.

Blame it on windows 7.
When I connect to a machine running win7 (and I have tried it with 4 different ones both 32 and 64 bit) it does take forever just as you note. WinXP connects in seconds.

It's got nothing to do with the service provider because the phone is just sending data. (assuming you are using the built in USB tether option) Other than V and having a solid data connection, no other provider involved.

I'd recommend Easytether. I use it to tether through USB and it fires up instantly, I never had an issue really. You also don't have to pay Verizon for monthly rape.

It could also be your computer...namely the WiFi card.

The one in my computer (Atheros) is fussy with some WiFi but not others...I have a Belkin USB device too, it never fails and is quick.

It is *NOT* Windows 7. I connect within 3 seconds with my Wnndows 7 machines, so it is definitely not the OS.

Yes, I have the issue with even a Linux OS.

VZ customer service asked me if I observe the network power going in and out. It was implied that there is a known problem with areas that the power drops. For my rural location there are times when my connection is rock solid and other times that the receive power moves around. In those cases my phone-to-pc connection might take several minutes before it is up again.

FYI, my PC identification time runs about 20-30 seconds. In writing this my connection has gone down one time, not a good weather day here.

I don't know what your issue is. Mine turned out to be the USB port. My laptop has three USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 port. Tethering didn't work until I put it on the USB 2.0 port. I'm using Windows 7.
