USB to SD Card?

Is there a way to plug in my Droid via USB and directly transfer files to and from the micro SD card?

Or must I remove the card and plug it into an SD or USB adapter and then move files around?

I have a gazillion photos that I'd like to transfer from my PC to my phone.

I've plugged in the phone to the PC and I see the phone charging but I don't see an icon for a new drive like when I connect a regular old USB drive.

You can do that via USB cable and select the Disk Mode (check either in settings or try to pull notification bar).
Or you can do that wireless, using for example ES File Explorer - you need to connect the phone and PC to the same LAN.

When connected, pull down the notification bar on the phone, and select Disk Drive mode. Or select it by going to menu-settings-connect to pc.
