Help USB won't connect on my PC

I have read 50 posts about the same issue, but no one seems to be able to solve it. I'm running Windows Vista (same issue on all versions) and the phone will always charge when plugged into a USB port, but only intermittently well connect through MTP or even be recognized as being connected. I've tried multiple reinstalls, Kies, no Kies, I can't get it work consistently. Does anyone have an actual solution that works?! For such a popular phone, these Samsungs seem to be far buggier than Motorolas!

Is there anything else on the computer that is trying to connect or sync to the phone?
Have you tried a different cord or a different usb port?
 
I think samsung pc software is crap but id have thought the phone would charge flawlessly even without any drivers installed?
 
Yeah intermitantly which makes it sound like not a samsung thing dont you think mate?
And im gladly done with Kies too lol :)

Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32906335#post32906335 Follow all the directions EXACTLY and in the order they're listed. It'll work!
 
It actually seems to work now that I disabled the windows update for it...it could stop again, and if it does, I'm all over the method bobolinko posted. I did see that yesterday, but had trouble downloading the files at work. Thanks guys!
