Can anyone tell what Upgrade tool mode in the USB setting is ? It a box you check or uncheck and to uncheck it you have to restart your phone.

The upgrade tool is software you install on a computer that checks a server for OS updates when you plug your phone into it. Supposedly if it finds an OS update it will update your phone. Many, including myself have found that if it finds an update it won't actually update because it will say your battery is too low even if it is fully charged. Others, as a fine example of Casio weirdness used it successfully. I guess YMMV, but there's only one update right now from M40 to M50.

Is there any way to put the official OTA update.zip in the root directory of the SDCard and boot into recovery to update from it? Does anyone actually HAVE that file?

If you will look in the all things root section here you will find the ROM for the M050 update. You have to install the custom recovery to do this as the stock recovery has no capabilities.

I can't install anything or get to recovery. No adb, no fastboot, and the software upgrade tool isn't letting me flash it because it says my battery is too low. It's at 100 percent. I have the mbn file, but I can't apply it to the phone because it won't let me get into stock recovery.

So far, I'm learning towards putting them both in a food processor to see what breaks first. If I can't get either to be recognized by adb and there's no known method to get fastboot to push files, I'm not sure if this is possible. I guess tearing them open and manually hooking to the emmc with the proper hardware might allow one to flash it. I'm not in possession of the equipment or knowledge to do that.
