Another Approach to LOAD and USE your own custom ringtone(s):

- Unmount and re-mount the uSDcard, via Settings->Storage, so that the default music player would rescan and recognize the newly added mp3 file.

- Open the default music player, and goto the 'Songs' listing.

- Long-click on the mp3 file of interest, and select the 'Use as phone ringtone' option.

HTH...

You can change your ringtone through your Android settings. From the main home screen press the menu button > Settings > Sound > Phone Ringtone then select your ringtone.

This is what I did (no idea if using capital letters makes any difference, probably not):

[edited] Created a folder on my SD card named Media. Inside of the Media folder I created another folder called Audio, and inside of that I created three more folders called Ringtones, Alarms, and Notifications.

I like having different ringtones for different people when they call (one for the x-husband, my kids, boyfriend etc etc etc). To set a special ringtone for my boyfriend I go in to my Contacts list and tap on his name there. Then I hit the physical Menu button on the phone and when that opens I tap on Options and then tap on Ringtone. ;)

To set the overall default ringtone (which will be used for those not in your contact list, or for those in your contact list who do not have a special ringtone set) you go to Settings, Sound, Phone Ringtone.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the details...after reading online last night, I did exactly the method you describe, but the songs I put in to the media/audio/ringtone folder are not showing up anywhere except when I look at my files in androzip. I cannot get "settings...sound...phone ringtone" to show my added ringtone.

any thoughts?

Thanks, I'll try this and see if it works.

Hrm. I'm using ES File Explorer, and when I go into my Ringtones folder and long press on one of the MP3 files, a popup box comes up. I then scroll down in that window and choose Properties. Looking at the permissions, the file is:

Readable: Yes
Writable: Yes
Hidden: No

Also looking at the file size: 415.15 KB.

So I would check both things.. permissions and file size. I've never tried to place an MP3 file in there that was full length, so I'm not sure if size would play a roll.

OK, so I'm looking at permissions (in androzip) for the mp3 I created...it says:
size 678 KB
read access: true
write access: true
then other stuff about my sd card

maybe the file is too big?

Well, I tried that and the song isn't showing up in the player...so, hmmm...wonder why?

Check the music file on your computer and see if it will play. I'm going to guess that there's something wrong with the file itself.

Check the Zedge app just to test the files. Find a ringtone in Zedge, save it. Then manually move that saved file to your Media\Audio\Ringtones folder and see if your phone will recognize it. I'm pretty sure the phone will see it under Zedge, but we want to check and make sure the phone will see it in your Media folder.

1) I use an entire song for my ringtone, so I'm pretty sure the size of the file is of no issue.

2) I can't remember if you use Handcent, but if you do, use the Handcent ringtone picker. It'll show all of your audio files no matter where/what they are.

3) Try downloading a small app called "ScanMedia." I use whenever I put any new media on the phone, because I was having trouble getting stuff to show up in the music player, etc. back in the day. You shouldn't have to unmount and remount your card just to scan for new files.

That's a good idea, I want to try it...

The file does play on my computer.

NVMD, I found it. ugh, why does it take me three times to figure things out?
So, hmmmm, ummm, sorry, but how do I find the saved zedge file? :o i'm embarrassed that i'm really so inept in this world!

EDIT:

OK, I did the move of a zedge file and i went into system, sound, phone ringtone, chose "android system" and lo and behold, the moved zedge file WAS IN THERE.... But my created mp3, which is sitting RIGHT next to the moved zedge ringtone in the sd/media/audio/ringtone folder, IS NOT in there. Hmph! what am i doing wrong?

Thanks for the advice...I don't use Handcent (I'm intrigued...what is it?)

I'll look at ScanMedia...do you use it after downloading things to the sd card?

OK, here's an oddity...when i go into androzip and into the folders and find the mp3 file in question, i can click it and choose "open." it asks me what i want to use...i select the default music player and it pops up and starts playing...but i can't find the mp3 when i open the music player or in my mobo player, etc.

any thoughts?

Thanks Melim! /hugs
I had tried using the tones chooser in Handcent, but it eventually corrupted my files. Not sure if it's the fact that I'm rooted/rommed or if it was just a bug in Handscent, but I stopped using that feature. I do love Handcent for my text messages though!!

Sushi;
When you save something in Zedge it will then download it to an appropriately named subfolder within the Zedge folder on your SD card.... I'm so sorry, I should of mentioned that before. :o

Zedge is a great little app and it stores things nice and neat for you, but I'm so anal retentive that I have to have things just so and in an appropriate folder, so I tend to move stuff in the event that I uninstall Zedge and wanna delete its folder later. I hate losing wallpapers and tones lol.

LOL, I agree with you on liking things nice and neat!! If i weren't afraid of bricking my phone, i'd rearrange the files to a more orderly system.

OK, so I don't know if you saw my comment above, but after the zedge experiment, here's what I said:

Handcent is a texting app. Probably not worth downloading for this issue unless you want a new texting app.

And yes, use ScanMedia after you put new stuff on the card.

Hugs to you too, goofball. :) And yes, it's because you're rooted. :p
"goofball" is my favorite term of endearment; no offense meant by it.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong at all. :) I do think though that, for whatever reason, your phone just doesn't like that file. Could be something in the way you've created it (the software you used, not you personally hehe). Try this free online ringtone maker and see if this produces better results for you. You don't have to keep the Zedge app unless you want to. I just wanted to use it for testing.

lol You are not the first to call me a goofball (although the boyfriend calls me a pervert), and no worries. You and I have our own code-speak so I understand what you mean. There's nothing you could ever say that would offend this old gal. :p ;)

Well, ScanMedia isn't working. I deleted the mp3 and re-downloaded it to sd card from computer, and tapped scanmedia and nothing happened. song cannot be found in my music file or seen in the system ringtone options. weird!

Thanks for the link...i'll give it a go. Edit: oops, looks like a windows only thing...just macs here.

i sometimes think my phone truly does hate me b/c i dislike dealing with technology so much! lOL :p

I made the mp3 with garageband and exported it as a compressed mp3...seemed like the right way to go, and was my only option...maybe my phone hates my mac?!

i actually already had zedge...LOVE the wallpaper options...and i must admit, after seeing your screenshots the other day, i went on zedge and looked at flower wallpapers. :D

thanks for trying to help me!

The compressed mp3 might be the problem. Save it as a plain Jane mp3.

I'll try that...I actually didn't see my computer give me that as an option....but i'll look again. thanks!

EDIT: garageband won't let me save it as an mp3 unless i compress it...otherwise, it is an .aif, whatever that is. although, i'm likely not using garageband correctly, so will try to keep googling on the issue.
