Use eris as air card?

I know older non smart phones you could use a modem and access the internet on a PC very slowly.....

Now with smart phones and data plans is it possible to plug say, an Eris, into the PC via usb and is it as a type of air card?

Sounds like pdanet is a nice little product. Haven't had a chance to work with it yet.

Has anyone used it to replace standard home web access (comcast, Qwest) for multiple computers? Would love to get rid of my home web access if this solution can provide decent connectivity for 3 laptops and still able to take in bound calls at the same time.

Thanks

I think I read in another thread that this solution for teathering only supports http, no SSL/TLS or secure sites can be accessed.

Please keep in mind---

Tethering is NOT covered under the standard "Unlimited Data" plan. Not saying you will get caught. Not even sure how they would catch you (data transfer, most likely). But if the do figure out what's going on, be ready to pay for it...

Just pointing this out from PDANet's site

Note: Once trial expires, you can continue using PdaNet for free. The only difference is that free edition blocks https port.

How do you share it between multiple PC's?

you would probably have to use a wireless router ... i say that because, though i use pdanet often, i have never tried to use it on the desktop pc that my wireless router is connected to so i do not know if it would work. but as far as my uses pdanet is great whenever comcast internet acts up. which, unfortunately, is more often than i would like. :(

You can set up an ad-hoc network if your PC has a wifi card. Just google "how to share LAN connection over WIFI"

I absolutly love this :D I cant wait till onlive comes out (new game console thing that runs purely on internet- OnLive: The Future of Video Games) I will have my phone connected to a netbook, and onlive plugged into the netbook. Pure video game pwnage :P

I would be careful with this. While our data plans are "unlimited", Verizon has ways of knowing if there is "excessive usage". Data amounts that would not be possible for a mobile device. I'm not sure how much data is used in playing online games, but if it significantly higher than what your phone can handle, I'd be weary.

Been using pdanet for a while now and as long as it is basic surfing or email access it works great and seems to bring up no flags. This is for access on the road or in a hotel that doesn't have access mainly, not home daily usage.

PS haven't run across many sites that are not accessible with the free version.

what speed does everyone have when surfing with pdanet. I had it pluged into the gf's laptop since she doesnt have internet and it ran at about 2.xx Mb/s. which drove me nuts.

that is increadibly slow. I thought this was going to be faster. :(

Why did you expect it to be faster? I'm pretty sure that's about the upper limits of EVDO Rev. A. Plus the latency is probably going to be higher compared to most traditional home Internet connections.

they have no way of knowing you are tethering with pdanet
They have no way of tracking it.

If you setup and use Proxoid, it's just as fast, and better (lets you do https) because its completely free.

No "Mobile Network" at the same time as voice with Verizon's CDMA2K network - that's why AT&T constantly mentions their capability to do just that in their ads (to make their weak 3G deployment look better than Verizon's).

If you live in an area without DSL or Cable service, but you do have a good EVDO signal, you could use Verizon's MiFi 2200, but you won't be getting something for free - unbundled that service is $60.00/mo for 5Gb of traffic. (I don't know if they will discount it if you bundle it together with a cell plan).
