Use phone/tablet as GPS Tracker

Hopefully someone can point me in the direction of what i want to do.

My aim/what i am trying to achieve is use either my sgs phone or acer tablet to track a gps unit that will be fitted to a motorbike that we are running in a race. The big thing/problem is we wil be in the middle of the dessert for 6 days with no internet access and virtually zero cell phone coverage so was wondering if anyone knew of an app that will allow us to track the bikes location purely using gps.

Many thanks in advance for any and all info/help

GPS technology is receive only, it does not broadcast from a device out, unless you're using a satellite / data service to send out the GPS location data.

What you're wanting to do, with purely using GPS, is impossible.

With the usual warning that an active GPS will suck the battery life out of the phone, there is still a way to do this using a secondary tracking server. For example, have a look at Glympse application.

Check out the Spot Connect (I cannot post link since I am a new member of this site!).

It can be controlled by your Android (or IOS) device.

With it you can:

1. Track your ride. Others can follow on a web site.
2. Send emergency 911 notice for repair, rescue or medial help (this service costs extra).
3. Send emails even when you are out of phone range.

Yeah, I've tested some of them apps on my smartphone. These are quite good to track each other family members, especially your kids. Have been using "family inspector" for a while, now I am testing family locator from google android.
