Use Prevail without service as "mini tablet"

With the $69 coming on BF on the prevail, I am wondering if it would be possible to set up the device to function just as a wifi android "mini tablet" with no Boost service at all? I'm fairly new to all of this but have recently successfully dual-boot rooted a Nook Color with CM7 for one of my children. I'm thinking that my younger child would enjoy the android experience, and the phone size would be easier for smaller hands than a 7" tablet (less likely dropped). She is already skilled at navigating android from my phone, and playing games, music, netflix, etc on a small screen would more than satisfy at this age. For this $, I don't think the platform can be beat, an inferior 7" tablet with a resistive screen and slow processor seems like the wrong way to go.

So, will the Prevail function with no activated service? Can I remove the phone-related icons or at least hide them so it appears less "phone-like"?

Thanks for any discussion!

Yep!!! As long as you have wifi you can still connect to the internet and market.. you can also root the device without having service.. even grab a texting app like ''text free'' from the market.. Rmoving the system apps is only possible with root,, again just grab free version of titanium from the market that will allow for deletion of system apps just becarefull which ones you remove..

I have actually found quite a few tablets (Velocity Micro readers made by cruz) that are the same price as the prevail and have a 7 inch screen with 2.0 or 2.1 installed and rooted people have had 2.2 installed. I've been doing some reading up on these tablets, and I think the 7 inch Cruz tablet would be the better deal due to just the shear size of the screen and internal memory (the prevail only comes with around 180mb internal and a 2gb mcsd.). The cruz comes with 256 internal and a 4gb micro sd. If you purchase the 103 it can be over clocked to 800 mhz, and the 103 cruz is just 89.99.

I'm not trying to knock the prevail, but if you can get a 7in tablet for the same amount of money, IMO: I'd get the tablet.
