Using a droid as an ssh server

I want to set up a small server in California so that I can connect my pc to that server using an ssh connection. I want to use the ssh to help me break though the firewall that surrounds the country where I live. I also want that server to be connected to a hard drive so that i can back up things from my webspace.

Will a quad core android do these things without blowing up?

It depends on the duty cycle of the device (is it designed to run 24/7/365), the ambient temperature (it'll be more difficult in a shack in the Mohave Desert than in an air-conditioned room) and how much data you plan to push through it.

Considering all the above, it would probably cost half as much to build a little dual-core Linux box that would run circles around an Android.

If that quad core Android device has USB ports other than the micro port used for charging, then possibly. If not, consider the fact that you likely won't be able to charge and keep a hard drive connected simultaneously (if the device even supports USB OTG which would be a prerequisite for what you want to do). +1 for a dual core Linux box (especially if you have an old computer laying around)
