Help Using A Lot Of Data

I've had my Desire a week & I love it :D

However I seem to be using an awful lot more MB on my internet plan than I did when I had my Blackberry.

When I had my BB I used approx 150MB in a month. Since last Sat I've used over 200MB! :eek:

Fair enough I've been messing about with it but still seems a lot.

I use K9 email program which is set to "poll" a\c's every 15 mins, Twitter updates every 30 mins & the Gmail sync every hour. Nothing else really is set to sync.

I have 500MB usage on Orange & unlimited push email but would I be right in saying the K9 "poll" will not be using the unlimited push email allowance & would use some of my 500MB every time?

I would appreciate any experts thoughts :)
 
Turn off mobile internet and only switch it on when needed. Auto sync things when you want to check e-mail etc etc. I've used 23MB in 2 weeks getting everything i need checked. I have plenty of access to wi-fi but i still use my mobile internet allowance quite often. Install 3G watchdog mate to keep an eye on things and just be a little bit more conservative ;) With the 3G watchdog you can try and figure out what's using most data and play it by ea, leaving certain things on and turning other things off

If I turn mobile internet off will that mean the things I have to autosync won't work unless it's switched on?

How do I switch it off?

I do use wifi but only at home as don't get access to it during the day so rely on my phone for that.

Ur e-mails will come through when you switch mobile internet on and leave it for a couple of minutes or if you just go into 'mail' and press refresh they'll come through, same with twitter and fb.
Switching it off is a simple matter of pressing the symbol on ur homescreen (assuming you have the widgets switched on). If not i reccomend you add them to one of ur screens as they're one of the most used shortcuts anyone could have on the beautiful desire ;)

Sorry to be thick mate but what do I got into to switch it off?

TBH it's a bit of a ballache to have to keep switching it on & off all the time but guess there's not much else I can do?

Will have a look at 3G watchdog though. I guess that won't tell me what's using the data though?

It's just a handy app to keep an eye on things (avoid those extra charges)

Honestly mate if you add it as a widget on your main screen it's as easy as licking your phone, no hassle at all.My shortcut was already on the homescreen, you might have to add the widget. Hold down on an empty part of the screen, then click add widget and then power controls or something similar. When you want to turn it on and off when u aint using it then all u hav2 do is click the symbol once, Easy pal :)

I still find it hard to believe I've used that much data though.

Am I right in saying the emails will be part of my allowance rather than push? Is this different on the BB?
 
I ain't sure with that to be honest.I don't send many e-mails. I've maybe sent 4 short ones on my phone in two weeks and my usage is only 23MB with everything as i said. I'm on orange with 500MB and push e-mail so i take it the e-mails use data but r just free to send!?!? :confused: Lol. Can't say i've been bothered enough to think about it until now since my data usage is low. Do you watch alot of vids on youtube and listen to music etc etc? Those things obviously use more data

Never listen to music or go on YouTube so can't be that.

I probably receive about 30-40 emails a day & send maybe 10 but this is only the same as my BB so can't be that I wouldn't have thought :confused:

I'm not too sure about the email data either. Anyone else help?
 
Hi, i also have question about this problem. I bought a couple a days ago HTC Desire, and before this phone i had G1...I also have data plan (50MB monthly) and this was enough for me (Mail, Facebook, using opera for web browsing)
but now i have problem because i do not use internet, but my phone download over 3Mb for 24h. i dont have idea what is using this amount of data??? is there any way i can check which application use my internet connection. I only have active my Gmail account and weather widget. I have disabled news and stocks sync.
 
I've found recently the browser seems to auto refresh the last page.

Not good if you've been using TVcatchup or similar and have a 500mb plan!

Agree.

I found setting my homepage to www.google.co.uk and always leaving the browser on that page when Ive finished using it seems to put a stop to this problem.

Also, I advise setting most apps like email to only auto sync every few hours, remember you can always manually check whenever you want aswell.

I use mine pretty heavily for internet use, lots of browsing the net, email, facebook etc and some streaming music and Ive never gone over 600mb in a month yet (my limit is 1gb).
 
Checked on Friday morning & I was at 294MB left available.

Checked this morning & it was 248MB.

Not used the phone a lot over this weekend so still seems a lot of usage.
 
Downloaded Trafficstats & the results are interesting.

Applications that I've never used or never even opened are using data:


Stocks 1.5 MB (don't have it to sync in Google a\c)
Footprints 1.5MB (never used it)
Peep 1.5MB (use Twitter for Android)
Friend Stream 1.5MB (never used it)


I also had Sky News app installed which seemed to use a lot so uninstalled that.

The calendar has also used 1.5MB but I don't have that syncing with Google, I just sync it as & when.

The 4 apps I never use how can I stop them using data?

Also how come Calendar uses data?
