Using an unlocked HTC Desire HD on 3 mobile

Hi all, I am thinking of buying an HTC Desire HD unlocked. I'm also on a contract with 3 mobile.
I was wondering what settings I would need to change for the phone to work with my 3UK sim, and also wondering if the free Skype-to-Skype calling, and free Windows Live Messenger would work on this phone (and if they don't work, what are the best free alternatives?)

Also do you think it's worth getting backup batteries, how much extra usage would i get with a 1500 ma/h battery? and would this phone work in Toronto, Canada?

three will send you the settings or you can send them to your self via the web, (if you lucky they auto get sent to the phone when you insert the sim card as the phone detects a change of network)

i can confirm that the skype service works as i use it to call my daughter, not so sure about live messenger but i dont see why not,

not sure how much extra life a 1500 batt will give but i can honestly say that iv never had a major issue can get it to last the day, if anything i find myself trying to kill the batt before bed to charge over nite, nothing syncing automaticly except htc and google, and using juice defender seems to work for me,

cant help you with if it would work in toronto,

I was just wondering because I was looking around the net, and I've seen people say they can't download stuff from Planet 3 (where I assume you have to download Skype from for there to be free skype-to-skype calling) because there's some root certificates on the firmware in 3 phones that non-3 phones don't have.

i used the market to download skype and found it works perfectly fine, however my handset is from three,

i do have a Sony Ericsson x10 which is on o2 but my missus uses on three, i will download skype from the market and test it out and let you kno the findings,

i bought this from someone with an unwanted upgrade from 3, but they unlocked it.
still..it is originally from three, so i would assume it works

p.s. if i perform a factory reset on the device, will all of 3's settings be erased?

No they should not. Factory reset means it will be put back to the settings it had as when the phone was opened from its box. Phones made specifically for a network company has the company stuff programmed into it. If you lose all of the 3 settings, it means the phone was not originally from 3

PS! Skype-to-skype as you call it, should be free no matter what, the same with Messenger. However, it depends on your plan with the network company how much your data charge is, as both programs use data from the mobile network to communicate =). Check this out with 3 itself

Hi, I called 3 about two days after I pruchased the phone and they happily gave me the unlock code (which worked), however when I put in a Virgin sim it would not find the network, I called 3 and they said it is a known Desire HD problem and I need to get the software re-flashed at the 3 repair centre. I havent had a chance to go there yet, as I was only calling about getting my old phone unlocked and they offered to unlock the desire as well, so I figured hey why not!!!! As for your other questions, I don't know enough to help i'm sorry. Good luck!
