Using battery when turned off

I don't talk tons like many folks might. I only use 700-1000 minutes a month. I do play games / browse the net, a couple hours a day and my phone holds a charge for 1-1/2 to 2 days.
I don't turn on GPS unless I'm going to use it. Blue tooth is only on when I"m making a call with it, and I shut off apps that staying running. Some of the games, though closed continue to run, if you don't stop them.

Everyones issues here all (through my own personal experience) appear to be user issues.

First off, don't turn off your phones. The phone is supposed to run constantly. That's why it won't charge without being on. Once plugged in the phone automatically powers up. Thats the way it was made. Believe me Google took into account how the average user uses their phone on a daily basis when designing the OS. Obviously just about everyone leaves their phone on all day long. The phones battery on average will last through a full day (convenient huh?). And the average user charges their device at night while they sleep. Now with a phone that won't power down while charging you would think when do you ever get a chance to turn it off? Well you don't. It's not needed.

Second, stop killing tasks. Your only making it worse by doing so. The Android OS is Linux based and manages all your running apps and services ON ITS OWN. Apps running in the background aren't actually using power only the services are. Things such as account syncs and weather widgets. Most of the built in services such as corporate email, alarm, voice dialer, etc. will run constantly no matter how many times a day you kill them. When you do this your phone will just go behind you and restart all the services you just closed hence putting extra strain on your battery. Google did not include a task managing app in the Android OS because it's designed to handle that for you, completely worry free :)

And lastly, the phone has a built in feature that allows you to see whats using your battery life. Menu button> Settings> About Phone> Battery Use. I'm sure most of you will find that your display accounts for more than half of your used battery life. Keep your phone on automatic brightness. It will adjust the screen for you based on background lighting wherever you are. Set a screen timeout of 15 seconds and leave it. Turn wifi and GPS OFF when not using it. And only use vibrate if you absolutely need to.

Follow these guidelines and you all should be fine. I've had my phone since launch and I run a home replacement app with 5 screens, Weather, facebook, and Twitter widgets, Facebook and gmail syncs, Hotmail and Yahoo updates, and I've never killed a single app since I've had my phone. My battery life is outstanding. Charge it over night using the wall charger and my battery easily lasts all day and then some. On a daily basis I: Text constantly (almost non stop), Visit facebook and myspace every 10 minutes, compulsively check the time so my display is always on, check for app updates, use google maps for directions and occasionally use the gps, listen to my music for extended amounts of time, make frequent phone calls, and surf the web whenever I'm bored. Oh and today I used my camera's flash as a flashlight in my dark attic for over an hour non stop and only drained my battery by about 10%.

So just chillax  and have confidence in your DROID's capability. I would also venture to bet that starting up your phone every morning, plus the OS booting all services, background apps, updating sync info, checking for incoming messages, etc. puts a heavy strain on the battery. Just another reason to leave the phone on. My phones never been off since the day I got it besides one occasion where my battery died cause I was too lazy to charge it

And I forgot to mention that I, along with my girlfriend, regularly play games on my phone too. Her personal favs are Phit droid and abduction. While I usually play Mahjong, labyrinth, bebbled, jewels, and a 3D rubix cube app.

I've had the Droid for quite some time now. Battery drain was a big problem. Luckily it's easily fixed. Download free ap 'Advanced task killer' and at the end of the night kill all aps. Make sure your gps is off.(easy to do in the same ap). When I powered down the suggested way by powering down, I lost 40% of the charge. Now I leave the phone on all the time and just kill all the aps and lose nothing or less than 10%. If you want to go a step further, just go to settings...wireless and networks...and put it in airplane mode(very easy). This shuts down all communication too, so you won't even get calls or e-mail. Haven't had a problem since and I have a multitude of aps on the phone.
