Using Blackberry charger on Desire

degadeth

Lurker
I forgot to bring my charger up to uni this weekend and I don't have a replacement. But I noticed that one of my housemates' Blackberry Curve's charger uses the same micro-usb connection and his charger fits and seems to charge the desire alright. Would I cause any damage to the Desire if I use it?

The micro USB interface is standardized. The charger should have "Output 5V" (have a look).
So the charger does no damage on your Desire :)

it will work
some EU ruling that all phones have to have the micro usb so save on the 100's of chargers for different phones one for all all for one :)
cheesy line sorry will grab my coat

Yeah will be fine cos all chargers are staring to be universal now so any micro USB charger should be fine :)

Are you sure it was an eu ruling? I thought manufacturers agreed it and not all of them at that

was trying to find the EU directive or it might of been under pressure from the EU as i do remember hearing about it

if you think about it it makes perfect sence all one needs is a cable in your bag and way you go
also thanks sak01 seen those articals too but cant find the EU directive

Yes makes perfect sense. It was.just the way I head it was something like "9 of the biggest mobile phone companies have agreed to..."

I really hated proprietory charging devices. It was ridiculousl

As I know, this EU directive / manufacturers agreement about chargers applies for simple phones only, but not for smart phones.

It does apply to smart phones. Specifically:
Are all mobile phones covered by the MoU?
The MoU covers data-enabled mobile phones, i.e. those which can be plugged into a computer to exchange pictures, files, music, etc. The MoU excludes mobile phones which do not support USB data exchange and also certain unusual formats of phone, for example phones worn as wristwatches.

i heard that apple will provide a converter. also on nokia n8 you can charge it with the micro sd and with the classic pin that has

It should be fine, I used my BB charger too, but the charge rate is slower than the Desire's (Desire is 1A and BB is 600mA both @ 5V), some chargers are 4.8V (my LG Shine Plus) or 5.2V which is what you have to watch for.

Yeah ... my work phone (Motorola W370) uses a mini-USB connection, which a lot of equipment uses so it's easy to find a cable. Problem is, it won't charge off a computer unless you install drivers ... yep, you have to install the freakin' drivers just to let the phone suck a little juice
