Help Using data in my sleep.

Oniocake

Lurker
I'm not sure what's going on, but I've been using the data counter application from the market and everything was going fine until a few days ago. now its telling me my data is constantly going up by itself, even with background data disabled. It's telling me I used 18mb of data IN MY SLEEP last night. I'm only on a 500mb/ month plan because I wait to download apps, updates, etc until I have WiFi available, so this is a huge problem. if this continues I will use up my 500mb by doing absolutely nothing. does anybody else have a similar problem? is it the app? I have both the avg free app and zoner AntiVirus installed and both say my device is clean. this is very frustrating.

HTC sensation rooted w/ stock rom

Any answers are appreciated.

This is just a guess, but I really don't think you have a virus. A lot of apps require access to certain things on your phone. Most apps require internet access, some more than others. Some app you downloaded has went on a internet frenzy. My simple suggestion is to go to manage applications and data usage in the phones settings, find out which app is using internet, and uninstall or disable that app. :(

Thanks for the suggestion, that must have been it because after uninstalling some recently downloaded apps it seems to have stopped going up by itself. Cheers!

You should turn it off at night if it is a problem for you. HTC is checking for updates, the market is checking for updates, your E-Mail is checking for new messages. Most apps that have ads will continue to run. My advice is to turn it off.

Ive just found this feature out so im happy to share.

Go to:
settings
wireless and network
mobile networks

then unselect 'enable always-on mobile data'

This will then stop data transmissions after the phone has properly gone to rest (20ish minuets after last use Ive been told).

Upon you touching the phone it'll then continue to to act as normal. Push email aps such as Googlemail will not be affected apparently and you'll still get emails the instant they come in.

This will also improve your battery life too.

Well... anti-virus programs typically download regular virus definition updates and run scans at night. Then again I've read that mobile versions of anti-virus programs are mostly placebos.

Oh excellent, glad to hear!

I wouldn't recommend that except as a last resort. Lots of people use their phones as alarm clocks and/or want to be able to receive emergency phone calls overnight.

Are you sure? I didn't think push notifications could reach a phone that's had its mobile network disabled.
