Using different keyboards for different apps - how?

How can I have my Hero set up so that I can use a phone keyboard for sending text messages and QWERTY for when I'm using other applications?

It seems to infer preferences from Android's keyboard settings, rather than the preference for each individual application.

(Whilst I'm here, is there any way to get the keyboard's auto-correct key changed from the space bar to something else? When I'm typing acronyms, for example, it'll make a suggestion when I don't want one and I can't use the space bar to enable me to start typing the next word!)

You can set the phone to use different keyboards in landscape and portrait mode (I have mine set to use compact qwerty in portrait, I think you can only have qwerty in landscape) but there's no way AFAIK to set the keyboard per-app. Maybe one of the 3rd party keyboard apps could help?

Also, with the acronym issue, when you type something the phone doesn't recognise, it'll be the first option in the box that pops up with common words. Tap that, it'll save it to the phone's dictionary, then next time you want to type the same thing it won't try to auto-correct it to something completely random.
