Using Dinc as a hotspot?

I am very new to this so excuse my ignorance. I have a Droid Incredible. I am getting an Ipad. A friend told me to get a WiFi only ipad because I can download an app to my phone which will turn my Dinc into a FREE wireless hotspot. He mentioned Pdanet. Is this possible? Thanks

It certainly is possible, but tethering might require an additional tethering data plan depending on your carrier. If you sign up for the tethering plan, then PDAnet becomes unnecessary. If you use an app like that without accepting the plan your carrier can add the plan to your contract without notice.

If you root, then you can download wireless tether. If you're interested, I'll find you the link for the website. That's what I use, and it is 100% free.

Free if you do not get caught and don't mind breaking the terms of your contract.

Chances of getting caught may not be good but it is always possible

Extremely unlikely. I had a 24/7 hotspot going for me and a bunch of family members while we were on vacation in Tennessee since there was no internet. Used close to 6GB within a week when I had been averaging 1 gig a month.

While that's true for most folks, keep in mind there is one absolute in this world. "Things Change"

I'll add my $0.02 as Verizon has already publicly stated that they will start throttling data to people who abuse the unlimited data package. They never set any amount that would trigger throttling just that it was like the top 10% of data users who are abusing the system. I myself use at times 6 GB of data a month streaming music and video and have been told that while it was high it wasn't a problem by a tech. But that could change with the new tiered plans but I still think I'm safe as long as I don't start going into the teens and twenties for data usage. Also throttling will be at Verizons end and not on the phone so doing the trick to disable throttling on the phone will not work.
