My 2 year contract will be up in August and I plan to upgrade.....I want to let my 7 yr. old use my moto droid for movies and music. Will I be able to do that? When they turn off my moto droid will he be able to use my wifi (you Tube) and all of my other game apps?? Will I still be able to download from the market or amazon appstore? If so should I root my droid before I upgrade or will that even matter?? Any tips?

I always recommend rooting just because it gives you a better user experience, but you don't need to to use the Droid without a data plan.
I'm assuming you'll probably do a factory reset once your contract is up. Once you do this, you'll be greeted with a phone line activation screen when you start up the phone again.
The activation screen seems to have no way to bypass it, but it's actually quite simple to get around: simply tap the upper left corner of the screen, then the upper right, then the lower right, then the lower left (clockwise circle from upper left corner). Note that you don't drag your finger, you just tap those four corners on the screen where you're supposed to touch the Android icon to activate the phone.
This will just take you straight to the phone's launcher and you can continue to use it with just Wi-Fi!

Thanks for the info :0) I've read a good bit on rooting my droid but I think it might be too complicated for me to do. I'm scared I'll mess it up. I really want to because the past 2 weeks my droid has really slowed down and I constantly get the message that my internal memory is full :0( Is there a idiot proof way to root my droid? All the backup the phone before you root and the lingo is soooo confusing to me

Put the apk on your phone's SD card and install it through Astro File Manager. Then just open the app and it'll root your phone for you.
After this, you can download ROM Manager from the Market, which you can use to first flash ClockworkMod Recovery and then make a backup. From there, you can start playing around with ROMs, or just install a kernel that will let you overclock, do Wireless Tether, etc. But I highly recommend, if you're into experimenting, a Gingerbread ROM like Liquid Gingerbread, and if not, a very stable ROM like CyanogenMod 6.
