Help Using Optimus S without Sprint..

Hi. I used to have Sprint service but cancelled it in August because I moved out of the country for graduate school. I still have my Optimus S. I'm going to be coming back to the U.S. for about a month and wanted to know if there is any way to use my Optimus S again when I'm back without Sprint service. Would it be possible to purchase a pre-paid service to use with the Optimus S? I don't care about the wi-fi or any of the extras, I just want to be able to make calls and text. Is there anything I can possibly do with this phone, or is it pretty much useless to me now?

Thanks

No it is not possible to still use your Optimus s What i would recommand you do is to go walmart and buy a prepaid phone along with the mintues

You could use a SIP-client (like SipDroid + Google Voice) to make and receive free voice-over-WiFi calls when you're in WiFi range. But I think that's about it.

You could call Sprint and see if they'll set you up for a month.

I think it may be possible to flash to Virgin Mobile? Seems like I've seen a thread about that here.

Like RazzMaTazz said you could use a SIP client.

I'll also add some more options:

1.) Skype works great on the Optimus S.

2.) Download my app called 'gVoice VoIP' on the android market to use the Optimus S with Google Voice over WiFi.

2.) Kinda tricky but you can load a Verizon PRL on the phone and use it on a Verizon based prepaid service called Page Plus Cellular. I'm actually doing that myself with this exact same Sprint phone.

Hope this helps!

How does skype work on the Optimus S? I didn't think it would work because it doesn't have a front camera. I tried downloading the app and it wouldn't work.

You may be able to use it with Cricket or Metro PCS... those are the only two prepaid providers that I know of that will allow you to register a phone from another network for use on their network (at least they did about a year ago).

Then you need to flash the phone to work on their network. It's a PITA to flash phones since it can be difficult to find a decent tutorial so if the ESN is clean on your phone you would probably be farther ahead by selling it on craigslist and buying a phone sold by the prepaid network you are signing up with.

If you do want to pursue flashing the phone I'd suggest checking howardforums or xda developers for some of the details.
