Help Using the EVO as a modem... FREE???

Hey guys,
So im trying to help a friend of mine. I gave her a desktop that i am not using as she doesnt have a workign computer at the current time. She wants to us it to apply for jobs, mock up her resume and what not. I told her that she could use her EVO 4G as a modem and access the internet using her phone.

We downloaded the HTCSYNC.exe on the computer, ran it, and was able to get it to synronize with it. However, the instruction manual says to choose "connect to internet" but i dont see it. all i see is "USB Tethering"... We called sprint, and regardless if you want to do it wirelessly or with the USB you have to pay $29.99. I find this obsurd and im sure there is a back door way to make this work.

With that said, my question is just that... is there a way to use the EVO as a modem for free? Would there be any hidden charges, and is it going to effect the phone in any way? (she has alot of text messages and files saved on the phone and last time she messed with it they had to wipe everythign on the phone)

Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

if i understand that app correct, that does not allow you to access any secured websites correct? are there any third party aps that do?

Yeah, that is one drawback of the free version. I think the paid version will allow you to access secure websites. I haven't used any other apps because I don't tether that much.

Easy Tether is another app that people use.

Here is a thread about it.

No. And Easy Tether is cheaper than PDANet. Last time I checked it was $10. Worked flawlessly for me and I used to use it all the time, until I rooted and installed a 3rd party wireless tether app which also works flawlessly and Sprint can't know about and can't charge you for.
