Help Using Ubuntu OS - My computer does not see my phone.

I'm using Ubuntu as my OS on my laptop and it does not see my phone. Also I am tired of waiting on the ghost 2.2 for the first gen acsend, so I'm ready to root. But I can't frind the app z4root in the market. Its days like this I wish I was not a cheap a$$ punk. Then I would drop the $500.00 bucks for the iphone5, get stuck in a 2yr contract, and pay a $150 plus phone bill monthly. Can somebody please H.B.O. ?
