Help Using Verizon Droid in China

23justice

Lurker
I have a verizon droid, the one that came out last spring, not the Droid 2 or original Droid. It said it was global ready, but when i moved to China in August they said it would cost me $3 a minute to use, so (on my family plan with parents) the verizon guy let me just pay $10 a month to keep the line open since i signed a two year contract.

I took the phone to china, and there seems to be a sim card slot, but i still dont know how to use it there. I keep hearing i need to unlock it or something but i cant seem to find a clear answer on the internet, in china, or here in the US. I want to use it in China, i mean i paid close to $300 in the US for it and it is going to waste, while buying the same phone here in china would cost over $500 since in china you have to buy a phone outright, there are no 2 year plans with a subsidy
thanks in advance
josh

Well you can just pay the Verizon fees, or you can unlock your phone. Unlocking means that you can use your phone with a different network. Unlock your phone and buy a China Mobile Network card like China Mobile or China Telecom.

You can also just rent a phone in China. Rent a cell phone and it will include a pre-paid sim card and you can have credits ready. You'll pay a fee of course when you want to extent your credits

ya verizon fees are insane compared to China fees though. how can i get it unlocked and how can i use this phone if the sim card slot doesnt work, which verizon told me it wouldnt

What do you mean the sim card slot doesn't work? Anyways better get another opinion, might be Verizon is only saying that to get your money. You can unlock it using an unlock software, a code or just pay someone to do it (the 3rd is best since its the easiest).

But if the sim card slot doesn't work, just rent a phone, or buy a cheap one.

there is a slot for a sim card, but everyone has told me that it is only there for looks. Where can i get good unlocking software, or even find someone to do it for me

I don't think you'll be able to use a VZW phone (Unlocked or not) in China... I think there is a disparate technology there (CDMA vs. GSM).

Oh I thought it is physically is not working. I unlock phones locally but this website can be of help. In China they only use GSM network but isn't droid a CDMA and a GSM phone?
