Accessories Vehicle Navigation Mount

They don't look the same to me. The i897 mount has a box section where the top of the phone goes. The other vehicle mounts don't have this. Samsung doesn't mention how charging is done or if charging apparatus is included with the mount as it was in the desk dock.

Guess we have to wait and see what ships with the unit. :confused:
 
Comparing the photos of the i500 mount to the i897 mount it appears that the i897 mount allows the phone to be slid in from the open (bottom) end of the phone to mate with the usb connector, just as it does on the desk dock. The i500 mount appears to capture all 4 corners and the corners are much more rounded to fit the Fascinate shape.

Don't forget that the usb port positioning on all the Galaxy S phones are in slightly different positions, which will make the mounts model specific.

I am curious about the screen shown on the Captivate mounted in it. Does docking it somehow give you that screen? With just the necessary apps kind of largely displayed? I'm kind of liking that for using the navigation feature.

Certain Samsung docking devices will trigger our phone's to use these different docks.

Without getting into the technical side of it, the MicroUSB plug on that Navigation mount is wired slightly different than say...your charging cable.
 
I received the Samsung Captivate Vehicle Mount and I'm very impressed with the quality of the piece. I had been using one of the generic mounts (mGrip) and although it did it's job, I wasn't satisfied. Most generic mounts use a flexible gooseneck stalk to hold the phone. This flexibility allows the phone to bounce and vibrate - it's just not steady.

There is no flexibility in the Samsung mount. No bobbing and weaving . . . none!! The phone is positioned in the mount securely and accurately, and once the phone is installed the piece with the power usb connector slides into the phone to secure the connection. There is also an external speaker jack that will become functional once we receive froyo 2.2.

When the phone is put into the mount and the mount connector piece is slid into position to mate with the phone, the phone automatically goes into the navigation desktop providing 5 large icons for the navigation functions.

The mount comes with a car charger cord included, no need to purchase one separately. Price is kind of high at $50, but it will be cheaper on eBay or discount sides if you're willing to wait awhile longer.

If you're looking for a high quality mount that provides an exact fit for your phone, proper automatic insertion and alignment (via the sliding power bracket) of the mini-usb connector and rock solid stability, this unit is the one to get.

Be aware that this mount will ONLY work with the Captivate - the other Galaxy S phones will not fit. AND Samsung mounts for the other Galaxy S phones will not work with the Captivate because of the case shape differences and the differing positions of the usb connector.

Hope this helps those looking for a vehicle mount for their Captivate.
 
A few questions:

1) Does the USB cord hang freely from the top (considering it's upright) of the unit, or does it employ the same method as the Nexus One and the cord comes out of the bottom of the unit and all you have to do is put the phone in the dock and it will charge?

If that isn't clear, I just want to know if you would have to manually connect a cord to the phone when it's in place, or can you just simply put your phone on the dock and it will charge without having to plug in a cable directly into the phone (the cable would be connected to the unit).

2) Does it work with a case? I doubt it but I can hope.

I am curious about this too. I have the soft Body Glove case and really don't want to have to get rid of it to use the car dock. The car dock does look a little more forgiving than the home dock, though.
 
The mini-USB end of the included car charger cord plugs into the vehicle mount, not the phone directly.

The phone is installed into the mount and "captured" snugly but easily at the 4 corners. No bulky sliding brackets to capture the phone. After installing the phone, a connector device is slid towards the phone. This connector device has a 2nd mini-USB male plug (carrying the connection from the car charger cord through the connector) that mates with the phone when the connector is slid into it's home or closed position. This connector device is a sliding rectangular black box so everything is covered and finished. Slides nicely and precisely into the phone.

In my car I leave the mount attached low on the windshield and the car charger cord plugged into the mount. The connector is slid to the "open" position. I then just put the phone into the mount, slide the connector "closed" and the phone automatically goes to the Car Home application which has 5 large icons for View Map, Navigation, Voice Search, Contacts and Search.

As I said earlier, the mount is rock solid - no phone bouncing, vibration, etc. The mount comes with a separate adhesive dash pad if you want to mount the unit on a different surface other than smooth glass. The car charging cord is also included. The finish of the mount is gloss black. After using the unit I do not have a single criticism - it's really that good. A bit pricey, but less than some car units that are not custom built for a single phone - nothing was cludged together to accomodate multiple sizes or shapes.

The mount WILL NOT accomodate phones with cases - this is a custom fit unit shaped just for the bare Captivate - even the thinnest of cases would not allow the phone to fit into the unit.
