There is a script that runs at boot that reverts to stock recovery. If you do not want that to happen, you have two choices:
Install a custom ROM which will wipe /system and push its own version with no script.
Rename the script. IIRC it is in /system and is called reboot_from_recovery.p . Rename it to reboot_from_recovery.p.old or .p.bak or whatever you want. That way it wont run.

There are a couple of ways. First, let me answer the second question.
Installing CWM does not wipe the phone. Unlocking the bootloader does. If you do not know the difference you need to stop right now a do some reading. While rooting is generally safe, bad things can and will happen, and the probability only goes up if you are unsure about what is going on. We were all in that position where there are a million questions once, so feel free to ask questions here...just do it BEFORE you do anything to the phone.
Pushing CWM can be done a number of ways:
- in fastboot ("fastboot flash recovery path_to_recovery_image", w/o quotes and w/your own path)
- with ROM manager (flash Clockwork Mod is one of the first options IIRC)
After that, renaming the file can also be done a number of ways:
- In adb ("adb shell" then "mv /system/reboot_from_recovery.p /system/reboot_from_recovery.p.disabled")
- With Root Explorer or any other file explorer which allows mounting the /system as R/W. Astro is not made to do this. I believe EStrongs can. Root Explorer is worth the $4. If you are only going to buy two root apps, Titanium backup and Root Explorer are it. I held out on RE for some time (2 years almost, actually), and I bought it a month ago and it makes life so much easier.

EDIT: as an added piece of info (just FYI), you can get into recovery mode. You are just in the stock recovery, which does not much for you. That is why we like CWM, it is a mod to the stock recovery that allows all type of fun.
PS: I am in pgh as well. Nice to see someone else from pgh here.

w00t pittsburgh... i have an idea of what i am doing. i used the walkthrough given here but they didn't distinctively tell you the differences between unlocking and adding cwm to the phone.. it was kind of packaged together with a warning that this will wipe your phone... so let me try what you said.. brb

Cool. That is one thing I think this site is missing...a guide not to rooting, but just with all the references one will need after one has rooted. I put that warning is most of my advice posts regarding rooting because there are some people who I have seen root with a one click method and no information. Then they do something stupid and think it is someone else's fault when the device bootloops or bricks.
Just FYI:
fastboot oem unlock is the command that unlocks the bootloader. That wipes it. Everything after that is trivial in terms of work required after the fact.

EDIT: There is a free root explorer? Let me check....
So I have no idea where you see a free Root Explorer. SpeedSoftware has a regular explorer for free, but that does not access places that need root permissions as far as I know.

Just rooted and while I'm waiting on my phone to reboot...
Let me get this straight. I was planning on installing ROM Manager, flashing CWM Recovery through there, and then rebooting into CWM Recovery to flash ROMs. So this won't work unless I rename that system recovery file?

@ BeachBumDeac... correct... i just went and edited the file and its all good now... its a 1 time thing... once your phone finishes booting... its there right now..

i downloaded the app and flashed it in... this Rom manager for CWM.. wil lthis update my CWM with CWM5 comes out?

Honestly I do not know...I have not used ROM manager in some time. If I recall, it will pop up and tell you there is an update, but it will not update automatically.

That actually should work. The file rewrites recovery once you reboot, so if you go straight from falshing CWM to flashing a new ROM in CWM with no reboots (reboot to recovery does not count..we are talking full reboots to the OS) in between then you should be good.
And, once you flash the new ROM, it should not contain the rewriting file so you do not have to worry after that.

so if I flash CWM Recovery through ROM Manager, I can boot up in fastboot and go to CWM Recovery? Or would it be stock recovery?

If you go straight from flashing CWM to fastboot to recovery with no full reboot to the Android OS in between, it should work. Try it...

Hm. I flashed CWM Recovery through Rom Manager, then hit the "Reboot into Recovery" option in the app. It booted into Clockword Mod fine, but for some reason wouldn't let me mount USB storage. Something about a missing file. So then I chose "reboot system now" so I could get the ROM onto the SD card, and it looks like it's in a boot loop of the Clockwork Mod android (green android with the blue hexagonal thing in his chest)
I'll probably let it go for about 10 or 15 minutes then try a battery pull...

your in the normal recovery. try using the up and down arrows and hitting the power button and then the up and down arros. the menu is "hidden" when you log into there. to get your CWM back when you phone boots just install CWM manager . and it will flash it right on there easy as cake. then you can even install new roms from that which then SHOULD overwrite that file NKK was telling us to remove.

I did a battery pull, restarted, and reflashed CWM Recovery just fine. Then I turned the phone off and booted back into fastboot (rather then using ROM Manager to reboot into recovery) and CWM started up. But for some reason I still couldn't mount USB storage. Very annoying.

Because of the file system and protocols used by ICS you will not be able to mount as usb storage. Even in recovery the MTP protocol just annoys me (although I must admit it is good to be able to use the whole 32GB for everything).
