Root [Verizon] Changing Roms

I just rooted my brand new S3 last week and I am on CleanRom with Lean Kernell and I am thinking about trying an ASOP Rom and Kernell.

What are the steps that I need to do to insure a smooth tranition.

Also, I know to do a back up first but is there anything I can do so that I don't have to do so much work to get my screeen back the way I have them?

Thanks in advance for any assitance in this matter.

I don't have your device but in general make sure your apps/data are backed up with titanium or mybackup etc... and only restore user apps, not system apps :)

Make a nandroid backup in case anything goes wrong.

Wipe all before flashing the new rom (clean flash/install).

That's mostly it. Mybackup has an option to restore homescreens. I think there are a couple other backup apps that have that option as well but I couldn't name them. I'll tell you though, the restore homescreen function didn't work for me on an AOSP rom but did on my stock HTC rom...

That's one reason I have condensed down to one homescreen. But one thing I like to do is keep screenshots of my setup so that when I flash a new rom I have a reference that helps me quickly put things back together.

a few things...absolutely make a nandroid backup before flashing another ROM. if you use an alternate launcher (like Nova, Apex, Go, etc), depending on what you use, you can save the layout and import that layout after you flash another ROM. this is a feature in Nova but i do not believe you can do it with Apex, but perhaps you can these days.

you may or may not know this but i think most people wipe cache and dalvik cache, and also format/wipe system (in your custom recovery, either CWM or TWRP, immediately prior to flashing the new ROM.

lastly, this is my personal opinion but flashing Jelly Beans (i'm using B14, but B15 is out there now) will give you a decent AOSP themed experience but everything works the way it should, as it is a TouchWiz ROM under the covers. i use B14 + Nova launcher and it's a fantastic experience.

thank you boofer,

I guess I know more than I thought as I had a rooted Evo before but i did everything you suggeted before reading your thread.

I also decided on the Jellybean Rom lol after researching. Great minds things alike. I am using Nova and was able to restore my screens with much trouble at all. This is great!

Just another tid-bit...

Don't forget the Gapps! I don't know for sure but the AOSP ROM's used to not have gapps baked in, however, some may. Just be sure to snag the latest/appropriate gapps.zip.

Also, Apex Launcher can be backed up and restored after flashing new ROM...I use it and it works very nicely. It's been a while since using a AOSP ROM but have returned to the TW platform. I'm sure I'll try one when I'm bored with CleanROM ("it just works!") ;)

I too came from the HTC EVO4G device and got my addiction started with it! It was a great device but I am really liking my S3 :p

Good luck :)
