I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII with Android version 4.1.2 on Verizon. I have jailbroken iPods before but i do not know much about rooting an Android. If someone can answer some questions for me that would be great.

1. What are the chances of me bricking my phone and how can I avoid doing so?
2. If I restore to factory settings/unroot would it re-activate my warranty?
3. Can I still update the Android OS even with a rooted phone?
4. What is the legal status of rooting?
5. Do you need to be careful to avoid bricking?
6. Will I lose all my data if I root?
7. Which website should I use to Root?
8. Can rooting give my phone a virus?

Most Importantly:
SHOULD I DO IT / IS IT WORTH THE RISK?

1. Slim
2. Depends on how you root. And there are ways to get around that.
3. You would update the Rom.
4. It's legal.
5. I don't even read directions and I still flash roms.
6. Not if you're careful.
7. None. Unless it's xda or here.
8. Not that I'm aware of

Welcome to the forums!!!!:D

I'll never own another phone that isn't rooted :)

For myself, the minimal risks are far outweighed by the increases in performance, features, and battery life.

What carrier do you have?

I have Verizon. Out of curiousity what did you use to root?

I have a sprint S3, so all I had to do was flash a custom recovery through Odin and then flash the files giving me superuser access. Done in under 10 minutes when you have all the files

However, Verizon tends to lock down their devices and make them harder to root. I'm not sure on the specifics of the s3, so If you'd like I can get this moved to the Verizon s3 all things root forum, where they can walk you through what you need.

That would be great if you could do that. Thanks!:D

Welcome to AF!!
I see my friend Rx has moved your thread here:)

There is always a chance you will run into something while rooting that will stump folks.

For example, a member went to root his device and the first file he tried to install rendered his phone useless. He has since sent it away to get fixed.

Now, many others have had great, easy success...myself included. Like Rx, every device I own from now on will get rooted.:)

Read. That is the best advice I can give you.
Ask questions. 2nd best advice.
Understand the rooting process.

Don't let this scare you tho. There is a "one-click" method now available for our Verizon devices. You will not lose data. But just to be safe, backup what you need to.....more on that later:)

See this sticky:D

And don't worry about your questions being silly or dumb, they are not...ask anything...we'll be here:)

Thanks! And how do I backup everything?

Well, for your contacts, back them up with your google account. Perhaps they already are, in which case that is good.

As far as your apps and settings, folks have used an app called Helium....in the PlayStore..to back up thier apps. I'm not sure if it backs up sms/mms/call logs etc.

As far as pictures and other files on the sd card, just transfer those to the computer.

Heh, I can't attest to the app backup that google does itself. I don't know if it backs up data also.

Another question (LOL) would I just take out the SD card? Also, how would I know if my contacts are backed up with Google and how would I back it up with Google. And how do I backup the SD card with my PC? (Sorry for all the questions Im just paranoid about -bleep- up my phone xD

No problem about questions....we don't mind:)

Is your phone set up to sync with your gmail/google account? If so, then you are set as far as contacts being saved.

You need not pull your card out of your phone to transfer files from the card to the computer....just plug the device in and the computer should see it. Pull down the notification bar after the computer sees it, and choose "mtp".
Then on your computer, navigate to the drive assigned to your device.

Can I have the link to the one click root for Verizon you mentioned?

Hello, I used that one click method and it worked perfectly! Thanks both of you for your help! :)
Suh-weet!! Glad it worked out for ya!

And as Bread said, that "one-click" method is sooooo easy! I can attest to that method as I used it on my wifes Note 2.
Too bad is wasn't out when I rooted my S3, but still, the method I used (via ODIN) wasn't too bad either:)

Welcome to the world of root access!!

now to talk him into an AOSP rom eh bread? :)

One more question, can I update the android version (like jellybean) regularly like every other phone or do I need to flash Roms?

You can but it will likely fail due to your unlocked bootloader/custom recovery.
And if it does update, you'll probably lose root.
I would just flash a rom with the updates baked into it.
Besides, roms are cooler.:p

Its better to just flash the updated rom . devs usually have it the same day the OTA comes out, so you'll likely get it faster by flashing it than waiting for your OTA :)
