[GN TOOLKIT V2.2] Unlock, Root, CWM + Flash Your 1ST Galaxy Nexus Rom For Newbs [LTE] - xda-developers
This is a great guide for a newb like myself because it explains what and most importantly WHY you do what you do.
It's very easy with the toolkit. It's like 3 clicks from stock to rom'd.
1st install drivers by running 1 exe file.
2nd run the toolkit.
3rd select what you want to do.
There are many options from unlocking all the way to relocking and making everything stock. The first post explains each of these 3 steps in detail.
Even if you don't use this method, I highly recommend reading the first few posts in this thread if you are new to rooting and romming. Unlike every other guide I've read on many of these forums, this one actually made sense to me. Yes I could mindlessly follow directions, but I wanted to understand how and why I was doing what I was doing. And this is the best explanation for a beginner.
