I know.. I'm cluttering up the board.. but I feel like a kid on Christmas Day!

I just flashed Leankernel.. haven't flashed a ROM yet.

Everybody remembers their first time :) Just thought I'd share mine with ya'll.

Agreed!

Should I download a "setCPU" app to under/over clock this guy? Do those actually improve battery life?

Well overclocking sure won't help battery, but underclocking can. It just depends what you want your performance vs battery life ratio to be at. But check out TricksterMOD if you want to play with the kernel settings in depth. Antutu is also a solid, yet simple app similar to setCPU

Congrats on your first flash. :D

I quit over/under clocking a long time ago. I don't think there's much noticable difference unless you go way up on clock speed and then it can cause instability and will definitely cause battery drain. So I just pick a good kernel and imo Leankernel is a great choice, it's what I run also.

Ahhh, I remember my first. Was a while ago and very sweet.

Seriously, welcome to the circus. Remember the cardinal rule of being rooted, master the art of the Nandroid and ALWAYS do a backup prior to flashing anything. Also, you may want to become familiar with ADB from the command line (as opposed to rootkits like Wugs) if you aren't already. Best purchase for a flasher is Titanium Backup if you don't have that. It will make your process must smoother. Finally, give The Chiefs "Quick Guide to Flashing" a read. It is quite good and easy to follow, even for a knucklehead like me. Have fun.

To the OP, welcome to the dark side. And as Chief says in his tutorial, Ti Backup is worth far more than the price.

To Chief, damn, wish I had that when I first did this. Nice tutorial! First phone I rooted was an HTC Dinc. That took almost 2 hours. Long involved process. Rooting the Gnex is a breeze in comparison. I'm at the point now where I'll try out new ROMs for a day or two until I find one I like. Usually only takes a few minutes once you get some confidence and an understanding of what's going on. Your tutorial does that in spades.

Cold Steel - you're welcome and the high praise is liable to give me a big head! :p

Trust me: a lot of sweat & tears went into that tutorial. Believe me, experimenting and trying to get it right isn't nearly as fun! But you know what? I know what DOESN'T work and why. So while a step-by-step guide will help you with the whats and hows, make sure you understand the WHYS of what you're doing... and that's a great life lesson, not just for rooting and ROMming. When you understand WHY you're doing what you're doing, it makes more sense and it's easier to isolate problems, often before they happen.

So if you don't understand WHY a step is in there and necessary, ASK someone in the forum. It's how we all grow and get better :)
