[Verizon] Installing any ROM breaks my 4g data?

aldar

Newbie
From 4.0.4 IMM76K I upgraded to 4.1.1 with the following:
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-toro-primelc03.img
fastboot flash radio radio-toro-i515.fg02.img
fastboot flash radio-cdma radio-cdma-toro-i515.ff02.img
fastboot -w update image-mysid-jro03o.zip
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.0-toro.img
Then rooted it and everything works fine with that setup.

Now anytime I install any ROM my 4g data no longer works. I get 3-4 bars and the little 4g but they are white and I cannot browse out, where minutes before they were 3-4 bars blue. I have even tried reinstalling the new radios separately after the ROM install, still no 4g. I have tried at least 6 different ROMs all with the same result.

I have toggled data on and off, airplane mode on and off, change to just CDMA and then back to LTE/CDMA in settings. In status I have good signal strength, network type is LTE:13, service state is in service, but Mobile network state is disconnected.

I have installed tons of ROMS other phones and never had this kind of issue. Any idea what would be breaking 4g data just by installing a ROM?

In the pics you can see full 4g blue bars with Stock JB and then just a few minutes later, sitting at the same desk, only 4 white bars with JBSourcery2.3LTE, it's the same for any ROM. I've been having this issue for a while and I cannot find an answer, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That sounds like going the long way around the barn to update your phone. Why didn't you root the phone first, install a custom recovery and then do all the flashing/updating via recovery?

Anyways, maybe try updating your radios to .10-fc04/fc05.

good luck

I have done that too. This is just how I've done it lately. I've tried the latest radios and a few older ones.

Well, try doing a factory data reset. Also, are you sure you're actually losing the data connection? I have had the blue/white/grey issue before and I couldn't notice any actual loss of connection.

I've started over/factory reset a few times. I give it 10-15 minutes to make sure it's not just taking a while to sync or something. Even aft 15 minutes, I cannot browse out to any website and I cannot use any Google apps. Voice and text work though.

Well perhaps you need to revert to stock and start over. There's instructions in one of the stickies.

Good luck

Done that too. Actually I reverted to stock 404 and stock 411 earlier today just to try again. After reverting & rooting each, 4g data worked, but as soon as I tried a ROM, it stopped working.

Thus my dilemma, oh well. I'm running stock 411, unlocked & rooted now. So that will have to do I guess. Thanks.

Yes, i connect to wifi, setup my Google account and make sure I can connect to it and the web, but as soon as I turn off wifi, the 4g blue bars go white and I can no longer get to any websites, etc.

Aside from toggling airplane mode, disabling & re-enabling data, switching from LTE/CMDA to something else & then back again... What else can I try? Are their some files I can check the contents of for certain settings or maybe check the permissions on some files to make sure they're correct, log files?

I found a post with someone having a similar problem. They had a GSM phone in Canada and they had to edit their APN settings to get it to work. I don't have the APN section in Settings like the GSM phone has. Can this be an APN issue? I have searched and haven't found how to edit Nexus LTE APN settings.

So, if you are on stock rooted 4.1.1 everything is fine? It is only when you flash a custom rom that things go wonky?

I'm probably over my head here, since I have yet to have 4g where I live and work, but I haven't had any data issues so . . . .

In your OP, the method you used bothered me as it didn't _really_ include the usually factory data reset between flashes. But you say that when you have flashed a custom rom via custom recovery, you do perform this step. I have found also that the I515 seems to like to have the /system partition wiped as well in between rom flashes, have you tried that as well?

Try this:
settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > network operators .......this will scan all networks (eg here in australia ...telstra...optus....vodafone....etc) I'm not sure of your carriers....... then select your network and it should register it

Hope this helps :)

I dont have that option. In settings > wireless & networks > mobile network settings I have "data enabled', data roaming', "network mode" & "system select." I have tried changing those around with no luck either.

Ok ....your rom must be a little different
I have installed 8 different roms on my current phone and most work straight up.......but there were a couple that I had to mess with the settings to get them to run

Does your phone have a setup app ???? maybe try that if it has (My friends htc has a setup app for the phone which sets network language etc)

No, I don't have a setup app or anything like it.

This is really weird and frustrating because I was installing ROMs on this phone just fine up until about a month ago. I first noticed when I installed JBSourceryV2.0-LTE over a month ago, but then I tried others and the problem persisted.

Since it works 4G works with stock, it's got to be something that all ROMs change that for some reason breaks my phone, but obviously not others. Maybe something the deodex or zipalign, etc process changes?

Well, I guess you'll have to call VZW and tell them that your phone is defective since 4g drops when you install any custom rom. . . . . _just kidding_.

This is one of those examples of YMMV I guess. I am at a loss and wish I could offer more help. All I know is that when I have flashed a custom rom, I boot into recovery, do a factory data reset, wipe Dalvik cache, then /system, then install the rom (and gapps package when needed) and haven't had problems. But it may also be because I have yet to try 4g on my phone.

hope you do find a solution and good luck

Thanks. Like I said I've flashed tons of ROMS and never had this kind of issue, even my X2 was easy and issue free. Stock isn't terrible, at least it's rooted.

OK, so how weird is this? I logged in to our VZW business page just because I wanted to make sure the MEID matched, well it didn't, at least it looked different, so I put in my phone's actual MEID and then reboot Eclipse and it F$#@ING worked! So then I try JBSourcery and it does NOT work. I called VZW and they said it is the right MEID they just at 2 addition numbers on the end for some reason I forgot now. So I tried reactivating again, just like before, with same MEID and it still doesnt work with JBSourcery, but it now works with Eclipse and stock!!!! The MEIDs are not changing between ROMs. WTF!!?? So do I spread my hatred between Verizon and my phone or just Verizon? I guess now I can just be happy with Eclipse, which I really like, but I wanted to try out JBSourcery too. UUGGHH!!

Very, very strange indeed. And what's worse is that it _seems_ to be pretty isolated to just you as I haven't seen anyone else post with this problem here or elsewhere. So at first I would think that there's a hardware issue with your phone and you should return it to stock and get a replacement.

But! When your phone is stock, the problem will be fixed. And you can't tell them that it only happens on certain roms. Arrgh!! indeed.
